Win2000 pcs Error: ioerror OFFENDING COMMAND:image

    Hi

I noticed on some of our Win2000 pcs, users have a document that
contains an image. (images come from the clients). When they print
the document the an error message is printed.

    ERROR: ioerror
    OFFENDING COMMAND: image
    STACK:
    /image

The document just prints the error message. Or the whole document
will print out & where the image is located will print the error
message over the top of the text.

The users have the lexmark printers & have the lastest postscript
    drivers PS3.

    any ideas?
    many thanks
    Diana

1.) What Windows service pack is installed? 2.) Is this a particular document type? 3.) When one of the PCs has a problem can the document be printed from a different PC? 4.) Can the document be printed without the image? 5.) What program is being used to print the document? 6.) Is it up-to-date patch wise?

    hi

    1) the service pack installed was SP4.
    2) its a standard word doc
    3) yes the doc can be printed on another pc WinNT4.0 and another version of the image of Win2000 built from WinNt4.0 & upgraded to Win2000
    4) Word prints the doc
    5) we ran the Windows update automatically in about Jan/Feb 2005 -so whatever the updates were then

as its isolated to that Win2000 image build I thought it maybe a .dll or other file used with that build? with this particular image it started with Win2000.

Is the document imbedded or just a link to an external source?

Are the versions of Office on the various PCs up-to-date with service packs and patches?

    Diana-

Just a thought, but when we have issues like that here where I work (and we process a LOT of documents!), the problem almost always seems to be the graphic itself; specifically, object-oriented graphics (i.e. not scanned nor Paint-type bitmaps) that were created using "Save As..." or "Export" in a graphics program. The usual culprits here are ChemDraw or SigmaPlot or other programs that draw very detailed illustrations.

Another symptom is that they usually fail on one kind or family of printers (e.g. HP LaserJets) while being able to print on another (e.g. our Xerox DC432.) It seems to be differences in the way the particular printer processes the drawing instructions in the graphic when rasterizing the image for printing. Sometimes this has its roots in the way the document was created, and whether the authoring app (or the author!) told it to include "end of job" or "form-feed" instructions.

FWIW, in those situations we can either ask the author to recreate it using another method (Save As... CGM or WMF or Print to PS File...), or we print it out where we can and scan it. (Sometimes the object-oriented image is so detailed that a scanned image is actually smaller, albeit uglier.)

As a last resort (and I'm not advertising here), we use a driver from "PeerNet" that can 'print' a rasterized version of the offending graphic to a TIFF file and then drop THAT into the document. (I know this isn't a quick answer, but when you're preparing files for the FDA, the primary objective is to get the file out the door!)

Re: Win2000 pcs Error: ioerror OFFENDING COMMAND:image

    Hey Mike

    thanks for that.

Yes I agree, ive experienced this issue before that its the image format creating the error. to get around this I tell the users to double click the image> a message appears prompting to convert to ms-office format> click on yes.
once the image is converted it wil then print out.

however the same document with the image can print out on a NT image. if the same document with the image prints out on this particular win2000 image it will print the error message.
thats why i thought it may not be isolated to the image but something else?

And this only happens when the document is printed? If so, I'd suspect the print driver. Can you uninstall and re-install the printer & driver?
