RAR Uploads

Hi,

I was trying to upload a RAR archive for this post when I was notified it was not among authorized file formats for upload. Given that RAR files don't cause viruses to spread or the like, wouldn't it be a good idea to include them among permitted file types? I recall Woody himself saying RAR files tended to be smaller than ZIP files. The compression is better, at least in most cases. That would also save some disk space on the server. Just my .

I guess I would complain about having to download and install yet another decompression utility to handle the RAR files... is that a valid reason not to allow the format?

Jefferson,
It seems like a good reason to me.
I thought WinZip ver9. SR1 covered RAR, but I just checked and apparently it doesn't.

That seems rather odd. Many of the freebies/ Winzip clones handle un-RARing. Maybe it's a licensing thing ???

Re: RAR Uploads

Well, WinRar can handle both RAR and ZIP files. In any case, if I can't upload a zipped file because it exceeds the size limit, I'll have to resort to the rar-first-then-zip workaround... And you'd need WinRar all the same

Re: RAR Uploads

It's my understanding that WinRAR is needed to RAR files, but many of the "Zip/Unzip" utilities available will handle the UNRAR operations, as I alluded to in a previous post. Certainly the case with Zip Genius, Ultimate Zip, Easy ZIP.

Re: RAR Uploads

Zip format has become the de facto standard, even if it may not be the most efficient one. Users with Windows XP don't even need to install anything to be able to open and create .zip files - it's built into the operating system.
Unlike several Loungers who will remain unnamed I am not a collector of utilities and I install as few of them as possible.

I can feel only pity and sorrow for those who have never enjoyed the comfort of a patchwork quilt of desktop icons.

Re: RAR Uploads

I would, but the desktop icons are not standard shortcuts, they have special properties (e.g. a different right-click menu)

Re: RAR Uploads

But you should be able to drag-n-drop those three desktop icons onto the QL taskbar without a problem. That's where I have mine.
