Making TOC list headings withOUT page numbers? (2003)

    I have a document with two sections. The first section has a bunch of headings, and each page has page numbers printed on the bottom. When I generate a TOC, everything is fine: I get the headings, dot leaders, and then the page numbers that correspond to the pages the headings appear on.

    But then I've got a section break. In the new section, I've specified NO page numbers, because I don't want those pages numbered. But I DO want the headings from that section to be listed in the TOC -- just w/o any page numbers. My problem is that even if I tell Word to not print numbers on the pages in the second section, the TOC automatically puts in page numbers (it just treats the first page of the new section as page 1, and goes from there).. Not what I want. What I need is something like this. Any ideas?

    TOC:

    Heading 1..................1

    Next heading.............4

    Next heading.............6

    [the stuff after this is in section 2]

    Next heading

    Next heading

    It is possible to get Word to give you a TOC without page numbers. Insert -> Field-> TOC then click the Table of Contents... button for some options. You can uncheck the box that says show page numbers. But of course would apply to the whole TOC which is not what you want. Could you maybe use different heading styles in the second section? The insert a TOC that would just work with the styles in the first section (with page numbers) followed by a second TOC working with just the styles used in the second section (without page numbers)?

    Or can you make use of TC fields to specify which TOC an entry goes in? See this page of the Office on line tutorials. Again this would make use of two TOCs in a row, one with and one without page numbers.

    You could use bookmarks to identify the two different sections of the document, then create two different TOC fields, using the b field to restrict each one to headings within a bookmark. Include the n switch in the second TOC field to suppress page numbers.

    If your two bookmarks are called First and Second then the fields would be

{ TOC b "First" }

    and

{ TOC n b "Second" }
