MS Antispyware real time protection?

I've now taken the plunge and installed MS anti-spyware. I already use Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware SE, but since a number of Loungers seem to suggest that using the MS product in addition may find things the others don't I thought I would try it. (A scan didn't come up with anything, in fact.)

But my question is whether to use the 'real time protection' in the MS product. I already use the facility in Spybot S & D which pops up a message when something (like installing a new program) wants to make a registry change. Would using this and the MS real time protection as well be as bad an idea as using two anti-virus products or two firewalls?

I have been using both the MS AntiSpyware real-time protection and TeaTimer (from Spybot S&D) for a while now as an experiment. There don't seem to be conflicts, but applications start noticeably slower. As always, though, I can't be 100% certain that it is due to the combination.

But if I install something new, or an update to a program, will I get two things poppping up asking me if I want to allow a registry change? Or doesn't the MS one work like that?

Yep, sometimes I get two popups, but if I click Yes (or No) in the Spybot one, MS AntiSpyware apparently registers the reply too.

    Ian/Hans,
There was a fairly lengthy discussion on MSAS back in mid February, including questions by myself re running MSAS real-time protection and Spybot's Teatimer together. Consensus was that they both do slightly different things, so best bet is to have them both running. I certainly do, and have since mid Feb and (hopefully not tempting providence) there has been no conflict.

Umm, in that thread you stated on 9 March

I think, on balance, that I'll give the Beta a miss, at least for now, although it's obviously going to become a firm part of the 'safety' arsenal, along with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D

(<post#=459624>post 459624</post#>), and now you write

best bet is to have them both running. I certainly do, and have since mid Feb

Re: MS Antispyware real time protection?

    Hans,
Well spotted! Sorry, I got the dates mixed up - it was the thread that started in Feb (wasn't trying to be clever) - I didn't take the plunge with MSAS until end of thread in March, after originally saying I wouldn't! (I think I posted that I'd downloaded it at the end of the thread). Weight of loungers' opinion in favour of MSAS, plus fact that although a MS Beta it was actually Giant's original AS prog, helped me make up my mind. Anyway, Feb or Mar, I've had both MSAS and Teatimer running together for several weeks now and so far no probs. I'll now crawl back in my box and practice my dates!

I downloaded and installed it exactly one month ago, and have had the MS AntiSpyware real-time protection and Teatimer since then too.
