    Printer problem

We recently bought a HP 5740 and have been using it for several weeks with no problems. I just went to print a document and the computer says there is no printer hooked up. I tried to reinstall the 5740 and the screen says I can't do so because the spool service is not running. All the USB connections seem to be in tight, there is power to the printer. Any ideas? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

I suggest you look in two places:
    1) in the System Event Log, to see if there are any relevant messages
    2) in the Services list, to see if the spooler service is started, and if not, what happens when you try to start it.

Lots of ways to get to these -- my ways are:
System Event Log -- Start -> Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System
Services -- Start -> Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Services -> Print Spooler

    Good luck!

Whilst you are looking at the Print Spooler service can you open its properties, look at the Dependencies tab and let us know if it is dependent on anything other than Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

The reason for asking is that some printers (Lexmark that I know of) can add their own services which prevent Print Spooler from starting till they have started. See for example <post#=466024>post 466024</post#>.

    Re: Printer problem

Well, seems we had a virus that caused our problem. The next time we shut down and re-booted we had a message from Norton and the problem was corrected. Thanx for your help!
