    Linking data between different worksheets

Is there a way to link data from one worksheet to another, separate, worksheet? I'm trying to get Excel 97 to automatically put data I enter into one spreadsheet to a different spreadsheet so I do not have to keep copying data from one sheet to another.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve Gardella

Re: Linking data between different worksheets

    Hi Steve,

    Two ways of entering this:

1-Select the cell in which you wish to receive the value, press "=", then select the sheet and the cell from which you wish to retrieve the value, press "Enter"

2- enter as the cell formula something along the lines of =Sheet2!A1 where "Sheet2" is the sheet you wish to link to and "A1" is the cell.

You could also try the Paste Link method

Select the cell to be linked
    Click on Copy

Select the cell where you wish the linked data to appear
    Click on Edit, PasteSpecial
In the dialog box, click on the Paste Link button. Voila !

Only, you must remember <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>, this method pastes Absolute references to the linked data
So don't try to copy formulas for other such cells.
They will refer to the same cell !!!

If you must copy formulas, then first change the absolute references to relative.

Re: Linking data between different worksheets

    Mike:

Thank you very much for responding to my post. I will definitely give your suggestions a try. Is there a way to do this as a range? That is, can I select a range of cells and then have the correcsponding cells in the other sheet copy their data to the first sheet?

    Thanks again,

    -Steve-

Re: Linking data between different worksheets

Thank you very much for your response. Help from India. Go figure. I am impressed this assistance is coming from so far away.

Is there a way for me to get the data shared in groups, ranges of cells if you will? Or do I have to do this one cell at a time?

    Thanks again,

    -Steve-

Re: Linking data between different worksheets

Create a link in the upper left corner of the range as described by Mike. Then select that cell and move the cursor to the little square in the lower right corner of the cell. The cursor should change to a solid plus sign. Press and hold the RIGHT mouse button and drag the selection down to include all of the rows in the range. Release the right mouse button and the press and hold it again and drag to the right to cover all of the columns in the range.

    Steve

1-Select the range of cells you wish to update by holding the left mouse button down.
    2-Right click and select "Copy"
3-Go to the sheet which contains the cells you wish to update.
4-Right click, select "Paste Special" then click the "Paste Link" button at the bottom left of the paste special form.

Also, if you copy a cell which contains a link, say with "=Sheet1!A2" as the formula, the sheet reference is absolute but the cell reference is relative. In other words, if you copied the above cell down into the next 10 cells below it, you would get "=Sheet1!A3", 'Sheet1!A4", etc.

You might check out the help file, it has a lot of very good information such things.

Re: Linking data between different worksheets

    Mike,

Thanks again. I will give it a go.

As for the Help file, I did try that but could not find anything on point. What would it be under? I tried "sharing cell data", "linking cell data", and a few others and came up empty.

    Thanks,

    -Steve-

    Steve,

Actually you will probably find much more useful information in the Visual Basic Help File. Look for topics such as "Range", "Cells", "Objects", and other such. You can get to the visual basic editor through the Tools/Macro/Visual Basic Editor menu. If you use it very much, you can move the command to your standard toolbar by going to the Customize menu and dragging the VB Editor where you want it.

    HTH,
