    Footers Not Printing Correctly

For the past two days, I have had problems getting footers to print correctly. I am using auto text, page x of y. In "print preview," the footer appears correctly, i.e., page 1 of 12, page 2 of 12, etc. However, when I print the document, the footer appears as page 1 of 1, page 2 of 2, page 3 of 3, etc.

I do not know much about using Word, but I have used the auto text, page x of y footers many times heretofore, and the pages have always printed exactly as shown in the print preview.

I am using Word 2000. Any help/advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Under File, Print, Print Options, check off [now I'm going on my memory but something like] 'update fields before printing' and that fixes it for me.

This was a known bug in Word 97 and we worked around it by turning off the 'Allow Background Printing' option. Dont know if this works in 2000 as we aren't using it yet.

My sincere appreciation to both of you for the prompt response and answer to my problem. The culprit appears to be the "allow background printing" option. I turned off that option, and now my document is printing the footers correctly. Thank you very much!

Technet article Q189175 refers to this issue in Word 2000.

There is a bug in Word that is different in different versions (including different SRs).
See or <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm>http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm for information on Page X of Y problems. You may also want to take a look at:

    Hope this helps.

    Mr. Kenyon,
I read that if I upgrade my Word2000 to SP-1, this problem should be corrected.
What if I send a file to someone that has not installed SP1, will the problem show up when they open the document?

Yes, it can. It is a bug in Word, not a corruption in the document.
    Cheers,

Does the person to whom you're sending the file need to add or remove any pages? If not, you can freeze the value of the Y field (the number of pages) by either typing over it or "unlinking" it. To unlink the field, click in it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9. Otherwise, you can tell the person to install SR-1 or unlink it himself before printing.
