Download Manager not working. (Home Edition SP1 build 2600)

My sister's having a problem downloading programs from several websites. For instance, AIM and Firefox to name a couple. It's probably her download manager. When she's on the download pages, the wait icon just sits there and nothing further happens.

Can download manager be fixed and how (step-by-step if you please). If that's not the problem, all other suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Thanks, Gloria

If you mean a third party (non-Microsoft) application then it is either the application's problem or the software vendor such AOL. Have your sister check for a more current version of the download manager. Many software sites don't play well with download managers. They do usually say so.

    Hi Gloria,
Do you know which download manager she is using?
There are many add-ons available and if you suspect it's the DLM probably the best bet is to reinstall it and try it.
I assume she is on dial up service and not DSL or Cable?

Opps! Forgot to mention that it's the Windows version that's stopped working.

Hi Viking, long time no hear from (smile). She's using the one that comes with Windows or IE6, don't really know for sure. She wouldn't think about buying a second or third party program when there's a free one available.. She's on cable, just like I am (Comcast High Speed Intenet).

It's the windows version that's stopped working.

Windows does not have a download manager in the vein of third party applications. In Windows you click on a download link and it just starts - no queing, no batching of downloads, primitive restart. Are you sure that she is using just whatever comes with Windows? Also, are you sure of her XP version?

Just a guess here, but would your sister be running a firewall? A check of it's settings may indicate certain web sites that are blocked?

Well hello there Duchess. Hows things in NJ?
As Joe said in his posts, there is no separate DM in Windows. All part of IEOE.
I would first try emptying the TIF and Cache folders. Then running her Anti-virus and malware programs. ( she DOES have them, right? ) Since it appears that only some sites are slow, not all, I wouldn't think it is a problem with the core Windows program. If by chance she DOES have a separate DLM, then get rid of it. Cable and DSL users shouldn't need them anyway.
Try that first and see what happens.

Hi Bob, things are fine in NJ, but not so fine with me. I fell in Wall-Mart and broke my knee-cap and my elbow about 5 weeks ago. I'm mending but have to go to therapy for the knee.

The problem was not with her computer being slow, but she's unable to download and files. The wait icon just sits there looking stupid and goes no where.

She's trying to download programs using IE 6. Maybe I should have posted this to the IE board. Yes, I'm sure she has Windows XP with SP1, it came pre-installed on her new Dell computer.

    Hey Gloria,
Sorry to hear of your accident. A break in that area is no fun, I'm sure. Hope you recover 100% and in a rapid manner.

So, I'm still not sure of the true problem you mentioned. Is she having trouble downloading ANYTHING or just from some sites, as you said in your first post? Or did I read that wrong?
BTW, I would definitely have her install the SP2 patch.

    </center> A break like that in Wal-Mart is no fun, but an attorney will tell you that it can be VERY enriching !!!! <img src=/S/money.gif border=0 alt=money width=17 height=15> <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

Gloria, tell your sister to run Disk Cleanup and dump her Temporary Internet files. That should allow her to download again.

Thank you Bob, I've got the best doctor (the man upstairs) working on my case.

She said that she can't download anything from anywhere.

    Gloria,
Have her check IE options>security>Highlight, Internet Zone>custom level>downloads. Check-- file downloads to be "enabled".
Also have her check if custom levels is set to medium.
