Widescreen TV Reality Check

I'm trying out a 30" LCD TV (Syntax Olevia LT30HV, on sale for $997). My experience with a laptop DVD player and a progressive scan DVD player is that I cannot fill the screen with an undistorted image. As illustrated in the attached, the most accurate image leaves quite a bit of screen available; with the computer, I can hardly do better than a 26" conventional TV.

Question: Is this normal? Is there a workaround? I have several days to return it if I am not satisfied.

Re: Widescreen TV Reality Check

I have had a Syntax LT27HV for over 6 months with no problems.
How does HD TV programming appear on the screen? Your cable provider must provide HD service for this as the Syntax TV is w/o an HD tuner. My HD service gives me about a dozen channels. Once you catch the Super Bowl in Wide Screen HD you will want an even larger screen.
Using a progressive scan DVD player via the YCbCr component connections provides a better quality image but will not fill a 16:9 screen unless it is a HVD in an expensive HD disk player. (search Google "high definition DVD")
I would keep the TV as your price was better that that for my 27" one.

Thanks, Bob. I think the answer might be to wait and get a bigger TV later, since I don't really need one right now. It was the price that sold me.
