Why did my pictures turn into red crosses?

    Help!
We thought we'd finished a report, but lots of the figures have been replaced by red crosses (x's) without explanation.
Why does this happen and how do we fix it?
    Much thanks,
    David.

its usually 'cos they're linked instead of embedded and the document can't find the link.

There was a bug in Word 97 (or it might have been Word 95) that would cause that to happen when the space reserved in the .DOC file to hold images is exceeded. This was fixed in one of the service releases.

See Microsoft KB article Q162349 for complete details on resolution and prevention.
