It should be a button in the toolbar of the window for a new appointment, and also an item in the Actions menu in that window (not in the main Outlook window)

Nope. Already looked there. All I have is New Appointment and Recurrence. It should be right next to Recurrence but it isn't. I have looked at every tool bar and every tool. It is nowhere to be found.

You could try resetting your Standard toolbar, although this will ruin any customizations you might have made to it. (With the toolbar showing, Tools>Customize..., Toolbars tab, select Standard, Reset... button)

With Customize you also might be able to add the missing button back.

Start creating a new appointment. In the menu bar of the new appointment window, select Tools | Customize... You can do either of the following to restore the Invite Attendees item:

    - Activate the Toolbars tab.
    - Click on Standard (do not clear the check box!)
    - Click Reset, then confirm.

    or

    - Activate the Commands tab.
    - Select the Actions category in the list of Categories on the left.
    - Select the Invite Attendees item in the list of commands on the right.
    - Drag it to the toolbar and drop it to the right of Recurrence...

I tried the resetting thing. No good. I do not have the "Invite Attendees" option in my customize tool bars selection. It is no where to be found. I have looked everywhere.

It seems your installation of Outlook is either damaged or incomplete. Try Help | Detect and Repair... from within Outlook.

Do you connect to an Exchange Server? I wonder whether this is an Exchange-only feature...

Does this occur for all appointments or only ones that match a particular pattern?

No, it's not Exchange only, at least not in Outlook 2002. I have "Invite Attendees" on my home installation too (Internet only, no Exchange).

thanks to all of you - think we''ve figured it out - it must be the email portion - we're only allowed to use a job-site specific email service - we're checking it out.

    Again - thanks to ALL
