    About supplying version/SR

I haven't carried out any analysis of postings but it seems a reasonably frequent occurrence that the first/second replies to a new posting have to ask 'what version', 'what service level' because people forget to supply these, even though the prompt is displayed at top right.
Would it be a useful change to modify the 'Make a new Posting' pages (for appropriate fora like Word, PowerPoint, Excel - obviously not all) to make Version, Service level etc mandatory fields?
The trade off is obviously increased size of every posting (for selected topics) vs the number of times threads are increased in size because of the need to ask for the information.
What's the view of other Loungers out there?

It's definitely a thought. I'll look into it.

    Re: About supplying version/SR

I'll contribute a view, because (I think) it was my suggestion which prompted the message in the first place.

I was responding then to a number of posts in which the version/SR was critical. The problems raised were ones which had been raised before, and problems which had been addressed by either a new SR or a new version of the product (eg, the "page x of y" problem in Word which has 4 different answers depending on Version or SR).

I'm finding now that the number of posts where this is important, but not specified, has dropped a lot.

Perhaps the message could be a smaller font- and read "please specify... failure to sepcify may delay an effective response".

And perhaps that message should only be in the "new post" area, and not in the whole forum? That way, it could be emphasised, adn not enforced?

I just found it easier to include the version and SR information in my sig. Then it's only if I post to a forum other than my usual that I have to remember to add this information.

    I agree that this may be the most effective way to do this.. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

But for those who need the same information about the OS and/or running multi OS's and Office versions, this can and will get out of hand.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I agree with dave. In my office I run O2k without any service packs on Win98. However I do quite a bit of consulting and my clients use a wide range of versions of Office and Windoze, so it wouldn't be approriate to list them all. Re: About supplying version/SR

Yes - but the purpose of my suggestion was to say that when someone has a problem, it's generally on a particular version and service level of an app, running on a particular OS version and service level. Therefore, when a new post is made, it must be relevant to list these parameters for the situation which resulted in the new post being made.
The version option parameter could contain an 'All versions' or 'Not Applicable' selection - no?
Also, despite Geoff's assertion that the number of posts where this information is important but missing is declining, I still think that a lot of people forget this info, especially new loungers.
It's no big deal either way - it just delays the answer a bit.
    Cheers
