HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

I have an HP laptop with an iratating problem. After the Win XP screen with the scroling graph and before the logon screen, there is a HP screen with big blue circles and a HP logo. How do I get rid of it?

I would guess this is an HP OEM version of XP?
There may be a specific .bmp or .jpg in your Windows folder (or one of its sub-folders) which you could look for by setting Windows Explorer to thumbnails view. If you find it, try either renaming it or replace it with a graphic of your choice.
Failing that, you may need to invest in a vanilla version of XP and reinstall, but you are liable to need the original installation disk(s) for specific drivers.

    Leif,

I'm not sure, but I believe that the logo image is wired into the BIOS on OEM machines. All the Dell systems I've worked on have a Dell logo screen of one sort or another that comes up during the boot process and I've never seen any evidence of the image anywhere in the files. They don't want you to remove that !!!

Yes it is the OEM version. I would think there would be a software switch somewhere to turn this on as no other version I've seen has the extra graphic. I don't want the hassle of reloading Xp just to get rid of the graphic. It's bothersome but only on startup.

You could well be right. My Dell's do the same, but - I think - *before* XP starts to load. I got the impression this HP logo was coming up mid-XP-startup.

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

You're correct. I just rebooted and got a Dell screen before XP started to load. That, however, wasn't the logo I was referring to. It's not the one that shows during the boot sequence, it's a Dell logo that appers when my system is idle for over an hour (not hibernation). I don't set my system to hibernate, but power off the monitor when I leave it. When I return and power up the monitor I get a black screen with a small Dell logo in the center until I move the mouse and get the log-on screen. So it must be part of the OEM XP installation. Where they hid it is anybody's guess. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

I don't believe it's in the bios as Windows has started to boot. Looked at msconfig, didn't see anything there either. Can the Windows logon screen be changed? If so I would think it's in that area. Will the offending logo be a .bmp? Are the Windows logos? I can try the search for .bmp but if I find it I would only be able to change it. It's just like car dealers putting their labels on car to get the free advertising. I just want it to go away, but I guess changing it would be better than nothing.

    </center>Exactly !!! And the car dealers don't make those easy to get rid of either !!! <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

You might be right about it being in the registry where the logon screen and screensaver are located. But I'm just guessin'. If it is, it's likely just a hook to grab a file from Windows to use and you could delete the value and be none the worse for wear. I'll see what I can find out and post back.

First Google turned up this this.

It seems this is, at the very least, related to the BIOS. This quote is from earlier in the thread. "Tests have absolutely nothing to do with the splash screen. Many companies hard code this into their BIOS. The only way to get it off if there is a setting in CMOS setup."

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

I have found the answer. After much poking around here it is, of coarse the registry. Go toHKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl panelDesktop. Find the key "wallpaper". If you change it to "(none)" it goes away. You also can change it to anything you want by inserting correct .bmp location instead on none. Now it looks like it's supposed to, with no dealer tag! Now time to find out how to change the the first "Windows XP with bar graph" to something more fun like maybe and Apple logon screen? Wonder what that looks like? <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35>

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

Different strokes for different folks. I just went to that value and it was already set to "none" and I saw the Dell logo on my last reboot, so I have to believe that's not the setting for a Dell. I suppose each manufacturer does it differently. Glad you were able to get it setup the way you wanted. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> Here's a Mac G5 Boot Panel you can DL. And there's a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> program to change the logon screen here. HTH

The Dell screen is most likely the one that is put up by the BIOS before any boot of Windows starts.

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

I think the one in the boot sequence is in the BIOS because it is there before Windows starts. Perhaps a CMOS setting could eliminate it (but I'm not the one it's bothering). The other one (the small one) has to be somewhere in Windows or the registry because Windows is running when I see it.

Re: HP screen before logon (Win XP SP2)

I don't see anywhere in this thread where the model of the machine is given. That would be helpful as I believe those who are suggesting the BIOS settings are controlling this feature. I recommend visiting HP.COM and poking around support for your model number and XP SP2, assume Home not Pro, but check with HP. They sometimes actually have answers that match your question.

If you find that there is a corp logo somewhere you may be able to change it, rename it, etc. but your model may have solutions to avoid.

Let us know what you find at HP or your point of purchase if they offer any kind of support.

The HP laptop in question is a DV1010.
