    Selection changes (2003 SP nothing)

    Hi All,

I've been bothered since switching to Word 2003 about a "feature". I wanted to find out if this was truly a feature, a bug, or a bug that's been corrected in a SP.

I make a selection in the middle of the line starting with, say, the word "first" and now drag to the right to select additional words ("second", "third", etc). My mouse may move up or down to the line above/below inadvertently. When I bring my mouse back up to the line I started my selection on, "first" is no longer selected and now "second" is the first word selected.

Sometimes, this does not happen, often it does. The more the mouse moves off the line, the more likely that "first" won't be selected when I move back on to it. When it does happen, I have to start my selection all over again. Of course the easy answer is drag slower. But I never noticed this behavior in earlier versions.

I checked the options and saw something called "use smart cursoring" under the edit tab, which was checked. I think this is an option new to 2003 - I've never noticed it before. The description seemed to suggest this as a (slim) possibility as to the culprit, so I unchecked it. While it was harder to make the above happen, it did finally still happen. So it seems "use smart cursoring" may not be the problem.

Any clues as to what the problem might be?

    TIA

    Fred

How about clearing the option "When selecting, automatically select entire word" (also in the Edit tab of Tools | Options...)?

    Thks Hans.

That seems to have done the trick based on a few quick trials. However, I believe that option existed prior to 2003 and I would think I would have had it checked since I like what it does for me. But I never had the behavior described earlier. So it seems a bit odd. Of course, no way to tell now given that I no longer have the older versions of Word.

So the question for me now is do I want to be able to inadvertently select half a word but be able to keep my entire selection or do I want to be able to select half a word, get the rest of the word as a bonus but risk losing that word. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I would have thought there was a better way.

I don't have Word 2003 myself, so I don't know if and how selecting text has changed. I had noticed in previous versions that having automatic word selection turned on can make the start of your selection jump from one word to the next, hence my suggestion.
