Renaming Desktop Icons and Removing .lnk Suffix (XP 5.1.2600)

I have a new CPU with XP and MS Office Pro, installed by my IT dept. Most of my desktop icons now end in .lnk; e.g. Microsoft Visio 2003.lnk. When I try to rename this icon to something shorter and more visible, such as Visio 2003, I lose the ability to open Visio. My home XP system does not have this problem. How can I rename these guys?

This is not standard behavior. Try the following:
- Create a text file (for example in Notepad)
- Copy and paste the following into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile]
@="Shortcut"
"EditFlags"=dword:00000001
"IsShortcut"=""
"NeverShowExt"=""

- Save the file.
- In Windows explorer, change the file name to Link.reg (the .reg is important). Ignore the warning Windows may issue.
- Open the .reg file.

The NeverShowExt registry value tells Windows not to display the extension.
