Rules on Any PC (MSO 2003)

    I've noticed something:

If I move or copy my PST file to another drive, then re-install Office/Outlook letting it set up the starting defaults, and then copy back my PST file, the following occurs:

Rules are copied correctly, bt when they "comeback", they all show "For Other amchine".

I then have to go through all the rules and "re-verify" the action for each rule, and it then is set to "on this machine only".

Isn't there some way to make these rules more "mobile"?

In my limited experience Rules which refer to Folders are very fragile: anything which causes Outlook to change the internal Folder ID will break the Rule.

    John:

That certainly seems to be the case...

The "old" method never gave me any problems like this at all... I keep asking "Why?"

I have my PST file on a share, which enables me to fire up Outlook from any PC in the house, even if the kids are playing games on the one I usually use.

I have many inbox rules which refer to folders, but only one of them seems to be machine specific. I have had to create one version of this particular rule for each PC. Other rules refering to other folders work perfectly <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Stuart:

I first noticed that my rules, located on my "C" drive, were ALL defaulting to "this machine only"... Wihisch what I get when I "just" set up a new rule...

I suppose I could try turning it off on all the rules before transferring it around... I suppose....

And remember, since this is 2003, the rules aren't a separate file (a FAR better scenario, to me at least), but buried in the PST, which I'm moving around in tact, so I don't know where it's getting messed up... But it's the same way, each and every time...

    Chuck,
I was not aware that the rules were ever stored in a separate file (they aren't in 2002) - on what do you base that?
Also, have you tried exporting your rules then importing them again once the reinstall is done?

That where I honed my propensity for re-installs...

MSO / Outlook 2000 they were stored in an RWZ file that was separate. The only thing that was integrated into the pst that I really noticed were the views.
