    Monitoring app

I'm looking for freeware that will allow me to specify a running application and then get some kind of performance log trace.

What I want to do is monitor some apps that I think are getting dispatched for no good reasons and accumulating CPU time.

Anyone know anything that can do this?

    What operating system?

What do you mean by 'dispatched'?

    I'm running WinXP Pro.

I just want to monitor an individual app and see everything it is doing detail.

You could start with filemon and regmon.

If you're a programmer, you may already have a utility like Borland's Winsight or MS Spy++ installed. Failing that, you could use a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware clone like New Spy to try to obtain an audit trail of Windows messages relating to particular windows.

    Re: Monitoring app

I couldn't find that program you called "New Spy" at the link you provided. I also checked Google and nothing there either. Is this the correct name?

The program name has no space in its name. I readily found it here: Download file

    Re: Monitoring app

OK, I got it and will try it.

Not sure this will do what I'm looking to do though. I'm trying another approach. I opened Start-Programs-Administrative Tools-Performance and created a counter log for the process in question. I'm getting some data but will have to let it run a while to see what happens. Setting this up isn't very straight-forward thanks to the poor MS UI in this application.

My bad. I failed to note that the page was generated search results (not static). I see Al solved it though.

    Re: Monitoring app

I tried the app. Doesn't seem to work. Also the comments in the doc file are a bit wierd. Notice anything strange?

It seems very old to mention Compuserve and Fidonet. Did Bix precede Cix? And he can't spell Warranty!

    (Is that what you meant?)

    Re: Monitoring app

Sounds like a bum steer all round. The site on which I found it distinctly said it was freeware. I did a quick comparison with Spy++ and it doesn't appear to work as advertised, as you say. Certainly save the $25 and maybe look for a more reliable clone.

Oh, and this just might have something to do with its apparent lack of functionality:
    Version 1.00 [August 5, 1991]
Who knows how it deals (or fails to) with 32 bit O/S.
