How to change the desktop icon caption font (SP2)

I should know this, but I can't find it anywhere (sob!)...

Following a reinstall of XP, I cannot find where to change the spindly font (MS SansSerif?) which appears in the desktop icons, in most of the panes in Outlook Express, and even here in the Lounge using FireFox while I am composing this post! I suspect they are all changed in the same place. Please note that I am not referring to the text size, which can be changed in at least a couple of places. It is the font that I wish to alter, to something like Arial or Tahoma.

It is no doubt extremely obvious...

The font for desktop icons can be set by opening the Display Properties control panel, activating the Appearance tab and clicking Advanced. As noted in the dialog, this will only work if you use Windows Classic style. If you use one of the Windows XP themes, it will override the settings in the Advanced Appearance dialog.

I never use Outlook Express, so I don't know if its fonts are configurable.

The fonts used by the Lounge are set in the skin, I don't think you can change them individually.

Yes, that's the one! I had forgotten that it was Icon that needed to be selected.

This controls the appearance of text in

desktop icon captions

most of the text in Outlook Express panes

most of the text in Windows Explorer panes

some of the text in Internet Explorer[/list]Do you know of a way to increase the size of the text in the first toolbar in most of these programs, the "File Edit View Tools Help"-type lines?

    Thanks!

    John

PS I am still using the same Lounge skin as pre-disaster, but the text seems strangely thin and weedy...

Are you using an LCD monitor? - you may have lost some ClearType setting which enhanced the typeface.

That would be the 'Menu' option in the same dialog.

The ClearType setting can be viewed/modified by clicking Effects... in the Display Properties dialog.

Thanks, Hans and Leif -- the combination of all of these seems to have got me more or less what I wanted! The ClearType option was another that I couldn't find.

Lucky all these things are so intuitive, eh?!

Re: How to change the desktop icon caption font (S

I found that Appearance was much more configurable in Windows 9x than in XP, and I miss the capability greatly. I'm thinking chiefly of colour combinations, and those could and should be configurable to let a user have a set of saved combinations for special purposes.

Ambient light level is a good example: if you're working in the dark (and want a bit of privacy) the cursed computer might as well be a room light it's so bright. Power consumption is another matter: there should be a configuration to help you save battery power. Plain old easy-on-the-eyes is another: I always change my screen display so as to give my text in Office applications a relaxing background colour instead of just black on white.

I'd really like Microsoft (or someone who has already mastered the art) to do the work for me. Either make it easy for us to configure to our own tastes, or give us a collection of presets that we can refine to our own tastes. Tell us what does and doesn't guzzle battery power. Give us a few subdued combinations so the guy at the next desk cant read my screen so easily.

Hey, come to think of it that's just what the skins in the Lounge do. Maybe whoever is in charge of that can help us out here. They, in turn, would have a marketable tool.

    John,

You may wish to install the Clear Type tuner power toy from here: Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP. Adds it to your Control Panel.

Yes, I had this one on before, but I could never see the difference between the various settings! Only 2.5 MB of code, too! (I'm only up to J in reinstalling minor stuff, too...).
