    451 Ratelimiting (OL03 - OS XP Pro)

    Hi,
I have prev been emailing to a group of 55-60 recipients.
Recently (24-48hrs) when I attempt to do this, I receive a reply " 451 Ratelimiting: too many recipients" on the last 70%? of email adrs.
This reply is generated by my PC and tells me it is from Sys Admin. (Only have small home/office network 4 PCs)
A similar prob did occur some time ago after updating Avast prog, so I undid update & only now update virus files.
Have also done sys restore to a point where this prob was not occuring (5 days?) but hasn't solved anything.
Also searched Google/MS but haven't found anything helpful.
Message isn't originating from ISP as I have OL set up only to send/rec when I click button.
    TIA
    Neville

Even though you state that the message is not from your ISP, the most probable explanation still seems to be that your ISP has limited the number of mails that can be sent within a certain time interval, to prevent spamming.

How do you know that message is not comming from your ISP. Nothing in what you posted would indicate that, and it sure looks like a message an ISP would send if you exceeded some limit on the number of messages you can send in some time period.

If OL2003 is the same as 2002, View > Options when viewing the message should show the message header and hopefully disclose where it originated from.

    Hi Legare,

When I send the message, this email appears in my inbox (5? secs)
I have Mailwasher running, so I assumed that any email sent from anyone (inc ISP) would show there 1st B4 I hit the Mailwasher process mail button & then my OL send/receive button to retrieve mail off ISP server and messages appear in OL inbox.

    Thanks

    Hi Leif,
Have opened the email message, gone to View (but for this particular message I only have 3 choices Prev, Next & Toolbar) there is no "option" choice.
I can successfully view the headers of email messages that are normally received using this method, but not this 451 "response"

Do you use ZoneAlarm by any chance?

ZoneAlarm Pro 5.x displays a warning whenever you send email with Outlook or Outlook Express that contains more than 50 recipients.

(I also came across a suggestion that some McAfee product may be doing the same thing.)

    Sorry Leif,

Have router and am not using ZoneAlarm or Mcfee
Am using Avast - my thoughts are remove Avast & instal AVG to see if this makes any difference.

This kind of message from your ISP is not sent to you as an email. Instead, I believe it is a code passed back during the SMTP session itself and formulated into a message by your mail client. (If you install a packet capture program such as Ethereal, you can see way more detail than you ever imagined on what is happening.)

Re: 451 Ratelimiting (OL03 - OS XP Pro)

Thanks for this info, it does appear to be zapped into my inbox somehow by the ISP. I have stumbled across a similar problem posted by another affected customer on the OZ Whirlpool site (Aust Broadband info) and Bigpond did put a limit on but due to customer complaints has removed it.
    So I'm back in business.
