Automatically updating a reference to a footnote (2002)

    Hi,

In the 78th footnote in one of my documents, I say, "See also footnote 77."

Since the document will be in progress for a while, instead of manually changing "77" to whatever the correct number is on a given day, can Word make this correction automatically -- as it does when I select "Update automatically" in Insert | Date and Time?

    Many thanks.

You can use Insert | Reference | Cross Reference...
Select Footnote from the Reference Type dropdown, then the relevant footnote.
The reference will not be updated while you are editing the document, but it will when you preview or print the document. And of course when you select the footnotes and press F9 to update fields.
