Joe

That's the version I'm using, but I could find nothing relevant on the forums. And if they're the same forums as the ones I looked at, they are fairly bad-tempered!

John,

I find that many forums are pretty mean spirited. They tend to treat most users as something less than the poster and probably not really worthy of their "valuable time". Sorry it was not any help.

Re: Real alternative

I may well have found a way reliable to move the Real Alternative time slider forward to skip over a couple of minutes of stuff being repayed from Radio 7.

There is a Go To option (specify the time to move to) in the Play drop-down menu, which seems to work correctly!

Re: Real alternative

Hello John and everyone,

I have not used Real Player since around 1996-97. As mentioned elsewhere some sites insist in publishing broadcasts in real media. In my country the most notable and useful SR (Swedish Radio, similar to BBC, a national public radio) use this format. But when it comes to "live broadcast", Listen Now, then they use WMP ... Same company, but TV, then I often can chose between Windows Media or RM, for old material. Of course there are many other sites I also use.

Now since some months I have been using (or trying to use) Real Alternative 1.46. I have experienced exactly the same problems as John. Sometimes, though, I can skip forward, other times the clock runs but no sound or picture. Skipping backward, is out of question, does not work. Clicking on stop, then play does also not work, and when finished (stopped) if try to restart by play, nothing happens. Then, to really make it a little more annoying, when I close the player (if the above has happened) I get the error message application has to be closed: Do you want to send info. to MS. Event viewer tells me something about wrong program/module 6.4.8.7.

I just think that level 1 in use and demand on streaming media is that you can move forward/backward, pause, stop, resume as you like. Next abstraction level would be quality of sound and picture, but my experience of Real Alternative has not reached beyond the obstacles at level 1. Using the mentioned "Go to" option is a big hassle.

Oh, I have found one way that work at least for now and at least with the mentioned TV site. If I check the settings on their site to remember Real media as my preferred (i.e. saves a cookie) then the media clip is opened embedded in a window. Don't ask me how it works, but this version of the player does not have the same problem as the stand alone player. But in most cases they have Windows media, so my main setting at that site is WMP.

So since some have no problems, is it depending on the publisher (media files) or what?

Re: Real alternative

Hello, I'm listening to Hancock's Half Hour from BBC 7 as I type this. I'm using Real Alternative 1.46 which includes Media Player Classic version 6.4.8.7. I can pause, move forwards, move backwards with no problems. No special settings.

Re: Real alternative

Chris,
Thank you for your reply; I at least got a reply here.

Yes, that is the version I am using. My initial problem with radio and TV clips is probably almost gone. I have looked through the site and almost all material is either WMP (I set a cookie so it shows WMP embedded) or for audio/radio the Real is embedded. However, if I chose to open any Real media in stand alone (MP Classic) the problems are still there. With this particular site it is not a problem, but not all sites show media embedded. For instance:

The Nobel Foundation site: Nobelprize.org with information about the Nobel Prize, laureates, etc. I have done it before but just for the purpose of testing I went to one of the laureates of The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2005; Thomas C. Re: Real alternative

Hi Argus,

I tried playing the lecture you mention and discovered a problem. If I press pause and then jump ahead I lose the sound. If I don't press pause but merely drag the slider the sound seems to be OK. However, if I go back then more often than not I lose the sound again (seems to be random). Once the sound is lost the only way to get the sound back is to close the player completely and start again. I don't get any application failure though. It closes normally each time.

Incidentally, I agree about the speech. It seems to be interesting though I haven't listened to it. However, I disagree with the opening statement about nuclear weapons not having been used in the last sixty years. I think depleted uranium weapons fall within that category.

Best wishes,

Chris
