    Trojan Hunter

I have no program that finds and kills trojans. I downloaded a program called Trojan Hunter 4.2 as trialware.
Has anyone ever used this? Or, can you recommend something better? I've learned to look before I leap and purchase a program without checking it first.
It was run and found no trojans, I didn't expect it to find any.

    Re: Trojan Hunter

    Hi Duchess,

I've just recently tried this program. I ran it once and it said it found a Trojan ( HKP.100 ) in an old Desktop Theme.zip file. I asked it to remove or fix it but it said it couldn't do it because it was in a compressed file. So it didn't impress me there at all. What should I do? Open it up and let it loose first? I don't think so. I just deleted the entire file itself.
To top it off, I looked at it's own list of trojans and it only showed it on the list but could not give any details on it.

i think I will give this one the heave ho.

Your opinion's good enough for this lady. Do you have another that works well? Free or not, I need an excellent one.

What antivirus program do you use? Doesn't it take care of trojans?

    Re: Trojan Hunter

    Duchess,
As Al mentioned, some AV programs also check for trojans, some don't.
I like to have a separate Trojan DetectorRemover in addition to the AV & malware programs. I'm not yet decided on one as of now but you may want to check out this site that compares 5 popular detectorremoval tools. Right now I'm trying XoffSpy which this site mentions as the top rated one. NO decision yet though.

    Check it outHERE

    Re: Trojan Hunter

I'm with you Bob, I like specialists in doctor's and in computer programs. Thos jack-of-all programs that masters on none aren't my cup of tea.

Norton's System Works taught me a lesson that I've learned well. It's like those radio/tv/record players (remember them)? If one thing breaks the whole thing fails, especially if it has to go to the repair shop. Know what I mean?

I've given XofTspy a try too, installed the trial version. Haven't used it yet but I will. Thanks for the comparison site.

    Re: Trojan Hunter

I'm using AVG Free AntiVirus and I don't think it checks for trojans. Any who, do one thing and do it well is what I'm looking for. I took Bob's advice and selected XoftSpy, the trial version from the review list he sent me.

    Hi all

My impressions of Xoftspy based solely on a visit to their website:

I find this "Support" answer to a users question as to why "CoolWebSearch Keeps Reappearing" is not satisfactory as there are free downloads readily available to deal with CoolWebSearch.
(CoolWebShredder and NoAdware are two free downloads that should be able to remove CoolWebSearch.)

As well, the above url to the Support page is the only place I could find a link to their "Purchase" page where their pricing is listed ($40 USD for a Home License). I refuse to purchase from anybody who makes their pricing difficult to find (just a personal gripe!).

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Trojan Hunter

    Hi Duchess,

Well my initial reaction to XoffSpy is a little on the negative side.

1.The trial version is crippled, in that it will look for problems but will not let you FIX them. I think that is my greatest pet peeve for any trialware. Either let me see how the full version works or tell me so before I try to use it.
2.The scan rate is on the slo.....w side when doing a full scan.
3.It came up with one supposed malware item but would not say where it was hiding? I could not find it listed anywhere in any list of nasties. This leads me to think that the "malware" it found was in the head of the program author, just to show that it could find something.

All in all, not a good review, to my way of thinking. I'll look further.
Let us know what you think of it.

    Re: Trojan Hunter

To be frank and not Gloria (smirk), I took the advice from another poster and installed the trialware version of Xoft Spy 413. I ran it today and liked the way it looked, the speed of the complete scan and ease of use. The only thing that ticked me off was at the end when the results were shown, it had found 3 incidents of Bonzi Buddy that my other scanners hadn't mentioned. Anyway, I clicked remove and the sucker light went off over my head. It told me that the only way to remove what it had found was to purchase the program.

To me that's blackmail, so I ran Regedit and did a search for BonziBuddy, which the scanner had reported was in the registry. I came up empty and scanned a second time with the same results. I think I've been hoodwinked and there was no trojan there. I was all set to purchase the trojan hunter, now I'm not so sure. This seems to be a common occurrence when you try the freeware version of most any kind of scanner.

Your opinion will be greatly appreciated (Buy it or keep looking)?

    Hi Frank??? <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>

See my post above your last.

I am going to pass it by. "Crippleware" is not trialware in my book. <img src=/S/rubbish.gif border=0 alt=rubbish width=15 height=15>
It's interesting that it "found" 3 items in the reg but you didn't see any.
I'll have to try a few more to see if any look better. I'll keep you posted Frank, and also Gloria. <img src=/S/frank.gif border=0 alt=frank width=15 height=15>
