    Old Sounds (WinXP Pro)

If I have my okd Win98 cd, what can I do to pull off the sound files, that are in cab files, getting bak their full names?

If I pul them out with Winzip, they all come out with the 16-bit names, losing the expanded form.

Is there a reasonable way to do this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Do you mean that the files are of the 8.3 naming convention? It's been a long time since I've dug into the .CAB files of Win98, but I think ALL the files in them are of the 8.3 form and really don't use "long filenames." Anyone else?

    Al:

No, the d--- things are there in long format when you install w98...

I had them all set aside, but, well, ....

I *don't want* to have to install w98 to get them...

    Al:

IF I wanted to try and install 98 and leave XP alone. could I? Would it leave my drive assignments et al intact? 'Cause it wouldn't see my NTFS drive, would it? So then, would the letters all shift around?

I have to admit that I don't know the answer to your question, but it sure doesn't look like something that's worth doing for some .WAV files.

Try the Expand command. Open a console window and type "expand /?" for syntax.

    Joe/Al:

I can get the expand to uncompress them... so can winzip... but it doesn't give me back the names....

Al... you're probably right... but this is just the kind of thing that by the time I see that it's more bother than... I by then am more determined to figure out why I can't figure it out...

The Win98 install decompresses them, names and all... and I have looked at a cab file producer before, and thought it ddid the same...

    Dunno what's different this time...

    Oh well...

    Chuck,

Take a look here for a pretty decent tutorial on extracting files from cabinets. Right off the bat I saw this ..."With Windows 98 you can also extract files from cabinet files by using the System File Checker tool." HTH
