    Word Aufo Format (2000)

I''m trying to turn off any possible Word Auto Formatting.
I've searched the Forums and tried all of the listed post's
but (there's always a "but") I still have some features
    being automatically formatted.
    1) Is there a way to actually 'see' the formatting codes ?
( Those familiar w/WordPerfect's display Codes know about this)
    2) How can I make a new NORMAL.DOT template and be assured
there is no autoformatting embedded in it ?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Word doesn't have "formatting codes" in the way that WordPerfect does.

You can think of a WordPerfect document as a stream of data that includes the text and codes that turn various features on and off. Think of word as a hierarchical collection of objects, with formatting attributes associated with them. The formatting is embedded in things like Paragraph Marks, Section Breaks, End of Cell markers etc. as well as separate objects that track the state of things like bookmarks etc.

To create a brand new Normal.Dot you simply need to delete the old one and start Word. Word will create a completely new one for you based on internal data about what should be in Normal.Dot. This will include a number of Autoformat features.

If you could be a bit more specific about the exact AutoFormatting feature that is bothering you then someone should be able to tell you how to disable it.

Is there life after "Reveal Codes"? is an article on the Word MVP site about Word and the "Reveal Codes" option of WordPerfect.

If you have unchecked everything on the 5 tabs of the dialog accessible through Tools>AutoCorrect Options..., and "dumb down" the Edit tab under Tools>Options..., then very little should happen on its own. Can you describe what you're seeing?

    Re: Word Aufo Format (2000)

I've unchecked all of the autoformat boxes.
I've killed autocorrect and "dumbed down" all settings.
I don't allow the NORMAL.DOT template to be updated. But....
. I usually create/work on outline type documents and use the
Tab key to space indents then the CONTROL "T" key combo
to indent the rest of the paragraph (quicker the mousing navigation).
    For instance
    1.0<tab> Purpose
1.1TAB>blah blah blah (no ENTER, one continuous paragraph) (CNTRL T to align
remaining text with the with first line) blah blah etc
1.2<TAB>more blah more blah (Ditto on the ENTER & CNTRL T)
    more blah etc.
. Sometimes, when I use the CNTRL T combo, this works fine. Other times and in the
same document without cutting or pasting something new into the document, when
I use CNTRL T the prior line/paragraph indents again (no pre-determined TABs set up)
and the current line indents right along with it. This one is a frustrating thing of beauty )dripping
    with sarcasm here).
. Another frustrating jewel is what appears to be automatic lists. Again, all in the same
document, set-up the same way (no TABS & dumbed down etc.). Like:
    2.0 Hello
    2.1 Hi
    2.1 Greetings
2.2 Presto, Im a new indented line here to frustrate you because, if you try to
use the backspace key I'll remove myself and go back to the end of the
word Greetings (at 2.1) or, if you try to hi-lite me with the mouse you
can't (it's like the 2.2 doesn't exist when using the mouse).
When I get really frustrated, my work around is to cut and paste into Notepad,
strip out whatever formatting I can see, and then save the text file, then cut &
paste back into my Word (Weird) document.
. I can't predict when these anomally's occur, unless I was to say that its usually
crunch time for the publication of the document (Manual or Procedure).

. Again gang, thanks in advance for your time.

    Re: Word Aufo Format (2000)

You say you have unticked all the autoformat boxes, but have you seen that there are in fact two sets of them? If you go Tools -> Autocorrect, there are several tabs (can't remember how many on Word 2000) including one that says Autoformat, and another that says Autoformat as you type. The 2.2 that you can't select with the mouse sounds like a numbered list that Word has created on the basis of your preceding paragraphs, and ought not to happen if you unckeck the box for Automatic numbered lists on the Autoformat as you type tab.

I always turn off nearly all the autoformat options except for smart quotes.

    Thanks Ian,
. Yes, I did remove the second set also.
. Yes, I strip it down to just the smart quotes also.

Thanks and have a Great Day.

    Re: Word Aufo Format (2000)

I turned those off quite awhile ago, and yes I still get the problem/challenge sporadically.

It's almost like a long lost friend: I know it will show up I just don't know when.
