    Rename Network Drive (XP Pro)

    Hi

I am wondering if there is a simple way to rename a network drive once it is connected via a batch file. I know once the Drive is there in my computer then i can right click and rename it from the default 'Share on Server'

    I am using

    NET USE X: SERVERSHARE

and want to do something like

NET USE X: SERVERSHARE AS 'X DRIVE'

    ...hopeful...
    Thanks,

Are you talking about renaming (relabelling) a drive on a remote PC or server? I can't see why you would want to do this, since you are already referring to it by drive letter, as X:.

    Hi,

no, sorry - I mean renaming on user's (eg mine) PC as part of the log-on batch file. The log on script creates all the network drives, but some of them are soooooo looooonnnngggg.... so I was wondering whether I could customise the names as part of this process too.
    Thanks,

If you find a way to do this then please let us know, I also have some ridiculously long network drive names created by my login script.

I have found a pretty neat method that works, courtesy of this website here .

It involves some vbscript, and the way I have worked it is as follows.

The LOGON.bat file Maps the drives, then call the script, which in the following example is in a folder on the server1, script called 'logon.vbs'

    eg:

    NET USE P: server1share1
    NET USE Q: server1share2

    CALL server1logonlogon.vbs

The VBS file looks like this:

    Set oShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
    oShell.NameSpace("P:").Self.Name = "Files"
    oShell.NameSpace("Q:").Self.Name = "Images"

fair play, it seems to work a treat!
