Intresting Bug

Very interesting bug (?) in word2000. Check it out

Open word and the type the following string:

=rand(200,5)

then press the ENTER key.

You'll get "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
all over the document.

Does anyone know if this is part of word
automation features? or just a mysterious bug?

Ever since that post, I've used it a lot. It sure beats "asdfasdfasdf asdf". But I don';t think it works for Word97.

Not a bug. It's an Easter Egg.

It does work for Word 97. Cool "feature" eh? People look at me funny when I show them a dummied document that has that all over the place... when I explain to them how easy it is to do they are amazed at my (as it should be )

The reason for the choice of sentence is that it uses every letter in the alphabet... so if you're testing out fonts you can use that to see what each letter looks like. Also the first number is the number of paragraphs and the second is the number of sentences.

have fun

According to a friend of mine, =RAND has been around since Word V2. He's been teaching Word for a long time and has always used this for the obvious benefits. Anyone have a version of V2 to test it out?

One small caveat not mentioned: =RAND has to be at the beginning of a line. For some reason, the first position after a hard page break is NOT treated as the beginning of a line.

=rand(200,5)
is associated with autocorrect.
If tools/autocorrect has the 'replace text as you type' turned off it will not expand.

=rand(x,y)
try different values for x & y
x = number of paragraph
y = number of sentences per paragraph

I just do not like the two spaces between the sentences.

I no longer have Word 2, but to my knowledge it wasn't available in that version.

However the sample text has been around for awhile. If memory serves, it was Word 6 that contained it. That would be logical since it was in Word 6 that AutoCorrect was introduced and as Bob pointed out, it's a type of hidden AutoCorrect entry.
