    XP Merge create data error (Word XP)

    In the Mail Merge Wizard sequence, when I click on Create data source, this msg. comes up....this operation cannot be completed because of dialog or database engine failures.Please try again later......later never comes..Do you have a fix? Thanks in advance.

    I receive this message when trying to enter a new record into my merge database.

    I've been using this merge for over a month, including last Friday. All suggestions I've read suggest that the error message is connected with merging from a contacts list. I am entering all my records individually into the database.

    Any ideas of what is causing the problem?

    It's not clear from your post: did you try the fixes in Microsoft's article, linked from the post just above by HansV?

    No. I did not try them because I was entering each record myself.

    I rebooted and am now able to enter a record. That may have fixed the problem.

    My concern now is that it may happen again. I'm interested in knowing what caused the problem ... if that is possible. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

    I think I've figured out the problem.

    When I have open the merge document (even if I'm not currently trying to merge into it), I cannot add a new record to the merge data. Is this how it works?

    When the merge document is open, the database is locked, so that may very well explain it.

    Hello Diane
    When Office XP was released I tried the 'mail merge new wizard' once. That was the last time.

    I customised the merge toolbar to contain the insert mergefield button.
    I drive the entire process from the tool bar.
    I never use the create datasource option, but use either excel, word or a database query.
    I always ensure that I know where the datasource is before I begin creating a standard merge document.

    The perennial problem when merging numeric data from excel is the display of too many trailing digits. This is readily overcome by adding some formatting options in the field.

    Some label me as resistant to change, but my opinion is that the new 'merge wizard' in OXP was a retrograde step. I am sure that many will disagree.
    I do like the ease with which labels can be propagated from the new tool bar released with OXP.

    Hi Geof,

    I thought I was doing okay with my merge database until last week.

    I, too, had created and linked toolbar buttons to 12 documents to which I selectively merge. Last week the links quit working, and I had to remove the existing (correct) link and relink them.

    I have copied the database to use as a basis for three new databases. I am also copying the same documents and revising them to conform to the new databases. After my original problem stated in this thread, I am now experiencing the database changing between each document.

    I think I need an indepth report on how the databases and documents work together, so I'll know what not to do and what to watch for when doing all this. If you, or anyone, knows of a thorough discussion on this, I will appreciate knowing about it.

    I've noticed that most features in Word 2002 and 2003 are one more click away than they are in Word 2000. The new merge wizard seemed to me to be extra steps.
