    Red Dots (2003 SP1)

Small red dots are appearing between words on my director's PC. Recently upgraded to 2003. I have checked every formatting option. The show/hide does not change this. The dots are right on the line between the words, not up in the middle like the black spacing marks. I have looked at the other posts and cannot find an answer. I cannot replicate this on my machine. Not sure about if it is tracked changes but when I try to turn this on to check, I cannot make just the spaces turn red, only the words.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Melanie

Could the dots be smart tag indicators? See Microsoft Office Assistance: I see something unusual in my document.

    Re: Red Dots (2003 SP1)

Thank you for responding - I had already checked smart tags. I have mine turned on and I cannot get this to replicate. Even if I turn the director's smart tags off, these dots still appear. Very similar to the smart tags but between the words, not under the words. Very strange.

I'm sorry, I have no further ideas. Hopefully someone else will.

Can you post a screen shot of a small area of these red dots?

Edited by HansV to crop HUGE screenshot. Please don't post pictures of over 640 by 480 pixels.

Attached are the dots - after zooming in - I see they are actually dashes.

    Any ideas??

Can you attach a Word file that has these in it? Please do NOT include any personal or company information in the file.

Does "What's This" help (@#$!%+F1) help identify any unusual formatting?

    Re: Red Dots (2003 SP1)

I have attached the file. I think it must have something to do with Smart Tags in Office 2003. When I open the file I can see the dashes, I went into tools, options, view, and turned off the smart tags for this file and the dashes disappeared. However, when I turn off his Smart Tags, nothing happens. I also cannot create the dashes on my pc. I do have Office 2003 and Outlook 2003 - it must be a setting that he has in Outlook?? See attached file.
    Thank you!

They seem to be smart tags for a person's name, where the name is a single space!

Does he have an entry in his address book with a person whose name is a space?

Looks to me like Stuart is right on the money. If you right click on the smart tag icon you can choose "stop recognising "" as persons name"

Or remove the smart tag completely
