Sygate or PC-cillin?

I did a stupid thing, purchased both programs, Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. I must remove one, but which one is the question? I realize some may feel that it's just a matter of preference. I have one but I need your opinions before I pull the plug.

The circumstance behind the purchase of the first one I bought and installed was that when I tried to register PC-cillin I had some problems that customer service could not seem to resolve. Therefore I asked for a refund and removed it from my computer. Then I got an email that said that there were complicated precedures that to be followed. To make a long story short, I decided to try it again and there were no complications this time. Then I realized that there were two programs doing basically the same thing.

All opinions will receive serious consideration.

Hi Duchess,
I think you are about at the personal preference point.
You will have votes for BOTH I'm sure, depending on what each user has in their own machine.
Of the two I would vote for Sygate but have not had any experience with PC-cillin, so who knows?

I use Zone Alarm and it does what I want it to do, along with Windows SP 2 which MOST current firewalls will need.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Sygate or PC-cillin?

Why do you feel forced to remove one of them?? As far as I know, Sygate personal firewall does not provide antivirus protection, so it really is not a pure one-or-the-other choice. I recommend that you disable the firewall feature in PC-cillin but keep it for anti-virus protection, and run Sygate as your firewall. I say this because the firewall in Sygate is much, much more configurable and has more comprehensive logging and reporting than the one in PC-cillin, and as long as you only run one for firewall, there is no conflict. However, if you only want a very basic firewall, then you can uninstall Sygate and sell it to a friend.

Re: Sygate or PC-cillin?

I guess I'll chime in since I come close to your circumstance and have done what Jefferson recommends. I'm in my third year of using PC-cillin for my antivirus program and up until this year it was ONLY an AV program and not a software firewall. I also use the Sygate (free) Personal Firewall program and am very satisfied with it. My copy of Sygate is already well "trained" to my use and I see no reason to change to something new. When my PC-cillin subscription ran out this year and I purchased a renewal, I of course got the firewal component even though I didn't need or want it. I then did as Jefferson said - installed the PC-cillin antivirus program and NOT the firewall.

If you are in the market for the AV component, I would recommend PC-cillin as it is effective, unobtrusive and semi-automatic in its pattern file updates. I don't know why you purchased the Pro version of Sygate as the free (personal) version is quite effective and thorough.

Re: Sygate or PC-cillin?

Viking, I used PC-cillin years and years ago when it was only an antivirus program, in fact I bought it. Now it's grown up and become lots of tools. I put both on my computer but didn't run them. I just looked at their options and to me I think PC-cillin is the easiest to configure and use.

Like you surmised, I have gotten various opinions, like you and I knew I would. My only concern now is that both scan in and out email, If I keep both, one email scanner will have to be disabled. Am I mistaken or are both firewalls? I think not.

As you are probably aware, I used Zone Alarm too, but decided it was a system hog.

What makes you think it is a system hog?

Re: Sygate or PC-cillin?

PC-cillin is now a combo AV & Firewall but I think that Sygate is only a firewall without AV. So putting myself in your place I would use the PC-cillin for anti virus and the Sygate for your firewall.

OPPS!! You caught me. I meant it's a resource hog, and I say that because I read it here on this forum by several posters.

You'll get no argument here, I agree with the most of you and that's exactly what I intend to do. I thank one and all for your most valuable opinions.

You're right Doc, good advice as usual. Thanks for chiming in. As to why I bought the pro version, I think I'm a purchase snob. I seem to like that word Pro, but I'm learning to come her first before I buy any thing else.

Re: Sygate or PC-cillin?

I agree 100%. I disabled the firewall in PC-cillin. Today when I tried to update components, scan for viruses and scan for spyware I get a message that "this feature is still initializing, wait for a few moments and try again." I've been waiting for over 10 hourst, that doesn't seem like a >few moments< to me.

What could have happened? Any ideas about how to fix it? I sent them an email but they're closed today.

I don't understand which program(s) you were using when you got such a message. Can you post a screenshot of the message please? Updating PC-cillin and scanning for viruses are TWO different operations and scanning for spyware doesn't seem to have anything to do with PC-cillin. Can you show more info please?
