How to store similar or repeated data (All)

Time and again, Loungers ask questions about tables that store similar or repeated data in fields in one record. For example:
    • Which hobbies does a person have?
    • On which days of the week is an employee available?
    • Which diseases does a patient have?
    • What is the maximum temperature on each day of the month?
Here are two ways to present such data:

Unfortunately, the rest of this post was lost in the server crash of 2007.

I entered this post knowing Hans wasn't asking a question. "Good post" goes without saying (yet I say it anyways). Sometimes design aspects like this need to be force-fed....I didn't "get it" until recently, and I must admit, a small amount of additional work in the beginning makes life a WHOLE lot easier in the end. Thanks for the post Hans, as well as the good links. <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>
