Iconoid

I was looking for a quick & easy way of making our Flash presentations against the backdrop of a "clean" desktop. I found the ware Iconoid, which does the job perfectly for me, as well as providing other "cosmetic" effects. Now I have an emptier desktop than HansV!

That desktop has got too much colour for me, this is my desktop. I go for the minimalist approach.

Mine may contain few icons, but I usually have a picture as background (changed every few weeks).

If you don't want colour, why not make it transparent?

Found through Google image search. The one in the screenshot is from kokomoaru.com.

Hi Mark,

If you are willing to register at WebShots, there are 100's of ABSOLUTELY STUNNING Backgrounds to download through their software!!! I would have thought that pic on Hans's Desktop was from Webshots. I have been registered there for a couple of years now... and have thouroughly enjoyed the experience!
SEE WEBSHOTS HERE

I realize this discussion is about pictures for the desktop of a personal computer but just a general reminder to all.... Just because you can download an image, does not mean you can use it on your own website or another's website. Read the copyright and permission info.

From the FAQ section of www.kokomoaru.com:
Facts and fictions : ALL images are collected from various websites around the world. All images has their owner's copyright. If you are the rightful owner and do not want me to publish your image on my site, please mail me and it will taken off the server.

Alan,

I'm sure that software does other things for you besides hide icons. However, if all you wanted to do was hide the desktop icons, couldn't you have right clicked the desktop and under "Arrange Icons By" unchecked the "Show Desktop Icons" option?

Just curious.

Alas, not on Win98. That option does not appear, on my setup at least.

Re: Iconoid

ahhh. I didn't recognize that screenshot as Windows 98.

Then the 'built-in' way in Windows 98 is not, as you wanted, quick and easy. At least I never thought so...I can't stand that Active Desktop feature. I'm sure you know the way, but (and this is Win 98SE I'm looking at) you check a box on the Effects tab of the Display properties to "Hide icons when desktop is viewed as a web page", then turn on the Active Desktop. My aunt activated this setting once unknowingly and went into a panic thinking she had broken her computer somehow.

Yep, I avoid viewing things a web pages when they're not.
The Iconoid did a good job for my purposes though.

Re: Iconoid

Thanks, Rudi. I've been to Webshots in the past but not in the last few years. When I was last on the Webshots site, they strongly pushed their own application which I was loathe to use. Since I prefer high-res (1600x1200) images when I'm trolling for wallpaper, does Webshots have images of this size?
