    Shutting Down

I know little about hardware, past the basics. And my puter has decided to take on a life of its own.

I seldom use screen savers, I just set the monitor to turn off after a given time. Works great. But I've had reason of late to install this screen saver. It runs great... For, it seems, about 2 1/2 hours.

Then, it TURNS OFF my machine. Not re-boot, or shut DOWN, but OFF.

I haven't actually seen it happen, naturally. When it does, I'm out of the room. But when I start up again, no errors. No "You shut down wrong..." no nothing.

I've checked all the Windows (XP-Pro) settings I can think of, and I looked at the BIOS this eve to see if there was some time there. Nothing.

What could this possible be? My daughter is running the same screen saver, seemingly without incident.

    ??

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Re: Shutting Down

Is this a Microsoft XP screen-saver, or one from a third party?
Is there anything relevant in the System (or perhaps Application) Event Log?
    Do you have a cat?

I don't know why you think it's the screensaver - it could be a coincidence and may be a hardware problem that just started to manifest itself. Maybe it's heat, a failing power supply, bad RAM stick, loose connection, etc. I think you'd better disable all screensavers again to see if the power-off problem continues. (It could possibly help if you could tell us the name of the screensaver and where it came from - or have you already Googled to see if they have a "bad reputation?")

    John:

    1) Third party -- but remeber, it works on my daughter's pc, so...
    2) Stuff in there, but no errors seeming to point at the screensaver or notice of shutdown
    3) No cat

And on top of runnin a"regular" ssaver all night without incident, when it does shut down (after I turn my back) it seems like a "good" shutdown. No erors reported, no scandisk, no nothing.

    Re: Shutting Down

The fact that the screensaver works on your daughter's PC does not necessarily imply that it will work identically on yours! I can point to a small number of "issues" with software that seem to be entirely confined to my own PC, that nobody else in the known universe seems to have... This is the nature of the variability of hardware and software.

Does the screensaver have any parameters that can be set? Have you put the problem to the manufacturer's Technical Support? Do they have a support forum? Does Googling on the screensaver name bring up any "user experiences"?

For a normal shutdown/startup in the System Event Log, you would expect to see three consecutive entries with the source of "eventlog", with the event numbers being, successively: 6606, 6609 and 6605. The first will be timed at "shutdown time", the second and third will be timed at "startup time". Are you saying that you always have the first 6606 event?

Some cats are so intelligent that they can sneakily shut down a computer without you noticing...! <img src=/S/catty.gif border=0 alt=catty width=19 height=18>

    Re: Shutting Down

Edited by Bigaldoc to repair the link. (had a "URL" at the end)

    John:

Now that manufacturer told me mine would work "just like his!" Well darn!

I've emailed the author... No word back as yet. There aren't any seeming params that would cause a **graceful** shutdown after as much as 2 1/2 hours...

I checked the event log, but I'll check it again.

If'n you want to take a look at it yourself, it's at

    Word Diamonds

    I'll let you know...

    Thanks,
    Chuck
