Indents not in tidy increments (Word 2003 SP1)

When I use Ctrl-M to indent my paragraph, it indents just slightly less than .5". So if I press Ctrl-M twice, then check format > paragraph, the left measurement is reported as .98"

I first noticed this when trying to automate IndentFirstLine - it results in the same measurement but in four nearly .25" increments.

Is it just me? I know this can't be intended (maybe I shouldn't make such a bold statement), but I'd like to correct it, if possible. I've searched this forum and the KB and found nothing (although that could just be me...).

Anyone? Thanks!

Try the following:
- Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
- Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
- Type ? ActiveDocument.DefaultTabStop and press Enter.
What is the result? (It is the default tab stop distance in points)

Hi Hans,

It is 36 pts. Which is what it should be, yes? That's half an inch.

In looking around, I also tried clicking the Increase/Decrease indent buttons on the toolbar, which do what one expects of them.

Hmmmm.

That should be OK. I'm using Word 2002 SP-3, and I cannot reproduce the problem, nor can I find anything about it. Perhaps someone else with Word 2003 can shed light on this.

Re: Indents not in tidy increments (Word 2003 SP1)

Thanks Hans,

[Edited by myself to add a little more info]

I was about to test in Word XP SP-1 when I got your reply. I did it anyway and Ctrl-M worked just fine. I then tried Tools > Macros > Word Commands and ran IndentFirstLine and it indented to .31". I repeated and it moved to .61". Yikes! DefaultTabStops is also 36 pts.

I used the Immediate Window to check ? ActiveDocument.Paragraphs.FirstLineIndent and it is 22.3 -- which is approximately .31"!

So this doesn't seem to be a Word 2003 problem -- though it does seem to be a "me" problem, given that your WXP doesn't have the same problem. Did you try IndentFirstLine by itself? I could update to SP-3, but it seems an unlikely fix given that I have a slightly worse problem with Word 2003.

What might I have done to throw this out of whack?

Thanks, K

I can't find a command IndentFirstLine in Tools > Macros > Word Commands, but I'm on a Dutch language system at the moment. I'll try on an English language system tomorrow.

IndentFirstLine on my Word 2003 SP1 adds a hanging indent of 1/3 inch. Repeated two more times the total indent is 1"

Changing my Font from Arial 12 to Arial 18 caused IndentFirstLine to add a hanging indent of 1/2 inch each time.

Re: Indents not in tidy increments (Word 2003 SP1)

Thanks, that makes things clearer. From the description in your screenshot, IndentFirstLine increases the hanging indent by the width of 2 characters, so the increase is not supposed to be the default tab stop, but a variable amount dependent on the font size.

Re: Indents not in tidy increments (Word 2003 SP1)

Thanks guys,

I scrounged around last night and noticed the two Char thing myself. What's that about? I am using Verdana 11 pt and 2 characters is just under 1/4". Is it just me or wouldn't it make more sense if it worked like Indent and relied on tab stops?

Speaking of which, you will recall I had the same misfortune when using Ctrl+M, but in trying it today, I didn't. Perhaps I somehow added odd tabs stops, but I sure don't know how.

So, given the ethereal nature of FirstLineIndent, I used the following VBA:

With Selection.ParagraphFormat
.FirstLineIndent = .FirstLineIndent + 36
End With

It works just fine if your tab stops are every 1/2" as mine always are.
