StyleRef fields in headers and Track Changes (WordXP)

Attached is a simple Word document with a StyleRef field in the header. If you click Track Changes, and view the header, it shows that the StyleRef text has been deleted. However, nothing has changed in the document. I was wondering how to prevent this from happening?

This is happening to more complex documents with StyleRef fields in them.

Re: StyleRef fields in headers and Track Changes (

Fields in the header update themselves automatically whenever the headers are displayed eg when in page layout view.

Revision tracking and fields updating is not a match made in heaven. The way to deal with this is to ignore the revisions in fields until you need a clean view of the revisions and turn off the revision tracking and update the fields. Doing this will remove all the spurious (deleted and replaced with the same field result) tracked revisions.

As well as showing the StyleRef as deleted it also shows it as added back in again. This is simply caused by updating the field. Even though the contents have not changed Word considers a field update to be deleting and recreating the content.

To lock a field use Control-F11
To unlock the field again use Control-Shift-F11

If you lock it then the field will no longer update as the document changes, so it may not display the correct data.

The Knowledge Base article 212054 says that StyleRef fields can be locked to prevent updating. How can this be done?

Thanks Stuart. One last question, when I save the document as an RTF, it keeps the StyleRef fields and the problem still occurs when I view it in Word. What is saving it to RTF doing? It looks exactly like Word.

rtf = Rich Text Format. This is different to Words private internal format and only supports some word features. When you save a document to rtf and then open it again you will discard some word features, see this article for a list of these features.
