2nd Notebook External Monitor Desktop (XP SP2)

I noticed that when I connect an external monitor to my laptop, I am missing my usual desktop icons on the external monitor. Do I need to copy them over to another directory??

There are two ways of using an external monitor. You can either use the laptop hardware to cause the external monitor to show exactly the same image as you can see on your laptop screen, or you can use Windows Display Properties to configure it as a second monitor.

If you configure the external monitor as a second display then it will have a completely separate display to your laptop. You can drag things between the two screens and your icons will normally only be displayed on the "primary" monitor.
