missing MSCONFIG etc (XP-SP2)

I know I'm missing MSCONFIG.EXE and HELPCTR.EXE. Maybe more. In C:XP there are a slew of DOS commands with .EX_ extensions, including MSCONFIG. But run will not find it even with a full path. I expanded MSCONFIG from the CD and RUN still does not RUN. I also cannot invoke Help Center from START. REGEDIT works. Help!

You might want to try this:

Click Start>Run, type scf /scannow

Have your XP CD ready in your CD drive. It will ask for it ( maybe multiple times ) and should restore any missing system files, including msconfig.

No go. RUN does not recognise scf/scannow.

It should be sfc instead of scf (System File Checker)

still no luck. Good news is that a Microsoftie came through and I have msconfig working again via a registry edit and help center is working via a short script. But I still don't know what else might not be working --- like sfc.

Well I gave you a typo that Hans corrected BUT it should be :

sfc /scannow with a space between the sfc and the /scannow.

Try that.

a space makes all the difference. Done. Although I had to hit the retry button maybe 70-80 times. I also went out and looked for updates and got nothing back. Does that mean that I have not overridden SP1 &2?

You should be fine, but to be sure, open My Computer and click on Help>About Windows to see if SP2 is still around. It should be.

You should be OK as long as no further updates are available. But do as Doc suggested to make sure.

Re: missing MSCONFIG etc (XP-SP2)

Hi Bob:
Just for clarification. In Win98, I ran SFC to check for file changes without having to use the win CD & without it copying a bunch of files. Is the behavior different now in XP? (I tried to run SFC /scanonce & it not only asked for the CD, but then I had to keep hitting retry more times than I can recall. And it never gave me a report (that I'm aware of).
Thanks,

Phil,

As you've discovered SFC on XP does not work the same way as on Win98. Here's some articles at the MS site. Microsoft Windows XP - System File Checker (sfc) and Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe) and Microsoft Windows XP - System File Checker

Re: missing MSCONFIG etc (XP-SP2)

Phil,
I don't know WHY SFC acts like that and asks for the location of the CD an unbearable number of times.
It would seem that once you told it where the information was located, it would remember that fact instead of repeating it over and over again. ( unless I'm not doing something right?? )

Re: missing MSCONFIG etc (XP-SP2)

Joe,
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
It seems to me that I did make those changes a while ago but they may have gotten lost in a routine clean reinstall that I did some time ago?
