Microsoft update site

Although it is not due to be officially launched until July the Microsoft Update service is available for use. It combines Windows update (Windows 2000 SP4+ / XP SP1+ / 2003) and Office update sites (Office 2003 / XP)

Good find, Tony.
After it installs new active x controls, it seems to work fine.

Re: Microsoft update site

Amazingly it seems only to support access via Internet Explorer! Doesn't Microsoft read the statistics on relative browser usage?

I also found the "Download and install the latest updating software" screen took AGES to download the software (in IE, of course)... But the end result is more comprehensive and better laid-out. I am still ignoring the "high priority updates" to display various versions of the Turkish lira in FrontPage 2003, the spam filters in Outlook (which program I don't use), and so on!

Yes, it seems to preform as designed on my test machine.

Well, the lawsuit settlement said they couldn't force people to use it. It didn't say Microsoft couldn't make them *unhappy* if they didn't use it.

Re: Microsoft update site

Just tried the new update site with the latest batch of security updates.

On my system it found 8 Windows XP updates and 1 for Office 2003, the installation of all the updates went smoothly.

Re: Microsoft update site

Similarly with me, but finding 7 Windows XP updates and 1 Office 2003 update, which I ignored since for Outlook 2003.

Smooth, but the inevitable reboot!

Re: Microsoft update site

Thanks for this. It seems that clicking the old Windows Update link tales me to the same location. Although, I have the update service set to notify me of new updates, it never seems to do so. I usually get the notice from you on this board.

Re: Microsoft update site

I updated to this new Microsoft Update last week on a tip but I experienced one anomaly which didn't sit well with me. After a scan for possible updates the results showed 4 updates for my Office 2003; 3 for language updates, dictionaries, etc., which I have no need for and the much appreciated update for the Junk Mail Filter, which I wanted. However, I found no way to opt out of the other 3 and consequently and due to my own ineptness, I ended up downloading all 4 files (7 megs). Expecting that I could uninstall the 3 unwanted files with "Add and Remove Programs", I saw much to my dismay that they are listed but with the notice that they cannot be uninstalled. Okay.... no real harm done, but nevertheless, I still didn't care for the inability to choose which files I wanted to download.

Re: Microsoft update site

You can hide unwanted updates, but surprisingly (?) they don't make it too easy for you. It took me a bit of faffing about (you have to select "Custom") but I managed it. Then they go on about you having hidden important updates, and your computer might be at risk, and so on...

Re: Microsoft update site

I tried to install it but it failed. Got this cryptic message (which I forwarded onto MS):

[Error number: 0x800B0100]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

Re: Microsoft update site

When I ran Microsoft Update this morning, it insisted on installing Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892310) before it would check for other updates. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a Knowledge Base article with this number!

Signs of things to come?
