    Patterns (2003 SP1)

Is there a way to lock row and column shadings when I sort?

For example, suppose I want the even rows to be shaded, but I want to use the spreadsheet in two different views - sorted around the value in one column. How do I get the even rows to be shaded in both sorts, rather than grouped together by the sort routine?

You could create the shading using conditional formatting:
    - Remove the shading you now have.
    - Select the range you want to shade, or the entire worksheet if you prefer.
    - Select Format | Conditional Formatting...
    - Select Formula Is from the dropdown list.
    - Enter the formula =MOD(ROW(),2)=0 in the box next to it.
    - Click Format..., activate the Pattern tab and select the color you want.
    - Click OK to return to the Conditional Formatting dialog.
    - Click OK.

This type of shading is independent of the way the worksheet is manipulated.
