Mail will not leave the Outbox (Outlook 2003)

When I try and send mail from Outlook, it places the mail in my Outbox and will not send it. Even if I open the Outbox and try to resend it, it simply goes back to my Outbox. I have exhausted all the info on the Help part of the application and still cannot get it to work. This undocumented feature started yesterday (Thursday) and does not want to disappear.

Any insight/help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

See if oneof the following MSKB article helps: Messages in Microsoft Outlook are not sent immediately in Windows XP Service Pack 2

If not: have you installed any software on Thursday, especially Outlook-related?

Thanks Hans . No, I have not installed any software on Thursday, or before, or since . The machine in question is actually my wife's and to her knowledge, it just happened. I had a quick look at your link and the thought of playing with the Registry scares me a bit - you hear (read) many horror stories. Will give some of this a shot though. What is still puzzling is that this seemed to happen just out of the blue so to speak.

Is it possible that she needs to clean up some her folders?

One thing I tried as a workaround - I created a new folder and then moved all the items in her OUTBOX to this folder. I was able to send them directly from that new folder.??? Go figure?

There may be a chance that the Outbox has become corrupted. Try running scanpst a.k.a. the Inbox Repair tool. If you search Outlook help for "scanpst", you should get a list including "Use the Inbox Repair tool". That will give you step by step instructions of what to do. HIt should cover the entire file; not just the Inbox. HTH

I tried running scanpst and this did not fix the problem. So I guess the question is - what next?

We're getting down towards the bottom of the barrel here!

Try deleting and recreating her mail account profile.

If that doesn't change things, you can try rebuilding her PST. The existing one will probably be under something like

    Documents and Settings[username]Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

Close down Outlook, move the existing PST out of its folder and then re-start up Outlook. It will complain that your PST is not there. Let it create a new one. Then, using something like File|Open|Outlook Data File, reopen the old one. Move all the non-default folders to the new PST using drag and drop. You will not be able to move the default folders. In those cases, move the data by choosing CTRL+A follwed by drag and drop. You can then close the old PST by right-clicking on its Personal Folders Folder and choosing Close. Things, hopefully, may now work.

Re: Mail will not leave the Outbox (Outlook 2003)

Well we finally figured out what it was. My original hunch proved to be the problem . My wife had reached the limit of her mail box size allowed by the ISP . When she deleted a bunch of old e-mails and moved a few to personal folders, then she was able to send e-mails.

Thanks to Hans and Unkamunka for their ideas.

    Cheers,
