Pointer disappeared. (Win XP Home - SP1)

I'm trying to help a friend who has lost her pointer. It was acting slow so she changed the batteries and now the mouse has gone south, east or somewhere other than the place it's supposed to be.

Please find a fix, I want her to keep thinking I'm computer savvy.

    Hi Duchess,

    Nothing worse than losing your pointer. <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 alt=nope width=15 height=15>

If it stopped right after she changed batteries, I would check to see if they were installed properly, with right polarity. ( plus + negative - ) and if the battery contacts are making contact with the battery poles.

That was the first thing I thought of. She swears that she's "turned them every way but loose" plus had her husband check if they were correct. She said tonight that they had managed to see it and get it to move slightly, it was hard to control. I had her go to control panel and click on mouse. There she was supposed to reselect options. Poor thing, she says she too tired to do it tonight, so I'll wait and see what happens after she shuts down and restarts.

I have no way of knowing, all I can do long distance is to ask her if they were fresh. I'm bowning out of this mess, too many problems of my own. My brain's tired and needs a vacation. I think I'l go play Bingo on the web and enjoy myself for awhile.

Since we're talking batteries, I'll assume we are dealing with a cordless mouse. My cordless mouse has a "reset" button on both the base station and on the mouse itself. When first installed (and possibly when the batteries are changed) both buttons have to be pressed to sync the mouse with the base station. Might this be the problem with your friend's mouse?

    Cheers,
    Regards,

Has dirt or dust covered the sensor on the bottom of the mouse?

Re: Pointer disappeared. (Win XP Home - SP1)

Viking, this is an update of the situation. She now has a pointer which reappeared after a complete shutdown of the comptuer over-night. After going to control panel and re-setting everything, the next morning it kicked in. I don't know if this had anything to do with her problem but she was only using 384 mb's of installed memory (RAM). She has 2 slots for memory, 1 had 128 MB and the second had 256 MB. We bought another stick of 256 and she's removing the 128 MB.

In your opinion, is 512 MB's enough to run Windows XP Home Edition? The clerk at Best Buy said that 512 was more than enough. Personally I'm using 1GB of memory to run the same program on the same brand of computer (DELL).

    Hi Duchess,
    Yes,
512 MB is fine to run XP with. That's what I have on my machine and rarely does it dip into the page file for more.
I don't know why the overnight turn off would account for clearing the problem unless she is running some program that bleeds off memory.
Does she usually leave it on all the time?
Some times a reboot works wonders for some problems.

Unless you are doing something particularly memory intensive, I find that 512 MB of memory is sufficient to run Windows XP effectively.

On the basis that you can never be too rich or too thin, I bought another 512 MB of memory to fix a particular problem -- but I don't really need it, now that the problem is sorted...

Yes, it is a cordless mouse connected to the USB port. The problem has been corrected, by itself apparently.

Neither were present, no dirt, no dust. Her pointer's now working, thank goodness for small favors.

Nope, she never leaves her computer on all night, in fact she shuts down at almost exactly 10 PM. This wasn't merely a reboot, she had done that several times and the problem remained. This was a complete shutdown.

Don't forget, A memory upgrade is usually more important than a processor upgrade.
1 gig of RAM is ,ore than enough to get rid of your pagefile space hogger. Enjoy it.
