    Severe Slowdown

    Evening all

My pc is a P3 900Mhz with 256 Mb of RAM, its getting on a bit now but it does the job!

I came home from work the other day and jnr had crashed the machine whilst playing his favorite Mid Town Madness demo. A restart caused Safe Mode to take over. A few more restarts restored normality but all is now not well.

A restart now takes 22 minutes, the hard drive spins nonstop and everything takes ages to complete. System properties reports 71% resources available. Zone Alarm anti virus, Adware Spy and Spy bot report nothing untoward.

I've run MS Config and halted all the processes I don't think are required and a few that I don't know what they're for! Still no change.

The situation reminds me of when I used to try to run the spell checker in the Ability word processor on a 4.77Mhz XT in the 80s!

Can anybody tell me what I need to look at next please?

Oh yeah and Hans, sorry I didn't get back to you a few weeks ago on your reply to a database problem but the boss had come to me with a commercial problem when the project is coming to an end and when engineering issues are higher on the priority list. So I couldn't spend any more time on the database! However, this is more important, this is a problem at home!

    Regards

    Graeme

    Hi Graeme

First of all, have you tried doing a system restore to the latest date prior to your problem? Give that a whirl and see if it makes a difference.

    Lyra

I never really got into that Restore thing and guess what? I wish I'd taken the time now!

Every once in a while I back up My Documents and wipe the hard drive clean with a format. But there's more and more to download and re-install each time now.

    Leif

    Thanks for the links.

I tried a defrag but an error message told me that there were disc errors and that I should run scandisk.

I rebooted into Safe Mode and with the router turned off and nothing running, I fired up scandisk and went out to paint the new trellace. (how do you spell trellace?)

When I can back in to get more Guinness and check on things, I had the error message, Scandisk has re-started 10 times because something is writing to the hard drive.

So, how can I find out what is running in the background. Is ME able to display a list of processes like XP does?

    Regards

    Trellis.

Go back to my post and read the links I included. One includes another link to an MSKB article specifically to cover the error "ScanDisk Has Restarted 10 Times Because Windows..."

    Thanks Leif

I had looked at the links but I'd already tried the safe mode suggestion so I didn't read it properly. Then I spotted the real mode/startup disc option!

30 hours and 14 bad clusters later my pc is as good as new.

And the trellis is all done too!

    Thanks

    Regards

    Graeme

    Re: Severe Slowdown

A few bad clusters may not be critical, but are quite likely to have been the cause of your slowdown.

I would run Scandisk every few days and see if any more problems are found. If so, it could be an indication of the beginning of the end of your HD.....
