    Temp files

I just noticed two strange files in my TEMP folder.
    They are at Cocuments & Settings>user name>local settings>temp.

    The files are:
    perflib perfdata 7o8.dat
    perflib perfdata 3e0.dat

I cannot delete them. System says they are in use by another program. They are not protected according to Properties. They are 16k in size and they will change the date time and last accessed , to the current time when I reboot. The numeric names do change, like 7o8 will go to another numeric number.
I have booted to safe mode and they do no appear at that location at all in safe mode.
I have googled them and there are a number of hits on them but none that I can make much sense of, but mention is made to look for any start up progs that look like they would apply. Couldn't find any but the normal startups that I always had.
I checked in the running services list and could not find any services that MIGHT apply?

Any ideas as to what they are and how to get rid of them?
So far as I can tell everything is running OK and nothing turns up after running SpyBot, AdAware and MS malware progs.

    Re: Temp files

They are harmless - they're temporary files generated by Windows for the performance monitor; as you found, they're automatically removed on reboot.

    Re: Temp files

They do regenerate them selves on reboot but I've always been able to clear the temp folder completely before this.

Also I disabled the performance monitor in Windows Services, so in theory they should not reappear? I also renamed the smlogsvc.exe file in system 32.
