How To Recover A Deleted File

I was reading the Q&A section of the July 2005 issue of MaximumPC. A reader wanted to know if a deleted file on a USB flash drive could be recovered. The short answer is yes. Just as a deleted file can be recovered from a hard drive; certain conditions apply.

    To paraphrase:

USB keys work like hard drives in the sensethat "deleted" files are not actually destroyed when you hit the delete key. The deleted file remains in place, but all references to the file are erased. The now-invisible file(s) will remain on the drive until they are overwritten by new data. As long as the data hasn't been overwritten, it's very easy to undelete it. There is a freeware utility called Restoration that will help you recover deleted files on a hard drive or USB flash drive. Restoration will scan volumes for deleted files that are still recoverable. Just point it to the hard drive or USB key and it will show you all the files it can recover, click the "restore by copying" button, and follow the instructions.

I've found two very useful freeware sites where Restoration can be downloaded. There are many other useful freeware programs available on these sites also...
My Favorite Freeware and Snapfiles .

    In their own words...

Restoration is an easy to use and straight forward tool to undelete files that were removed from the recycle bin or directly deleted from within Windows, and we were also able to recover photos from a Flash card that had been formatted. Upon start, you can scan for all files that may be recovered and also limit the results by entering a search term or extension. In addition, it also provides the option to wipe the found files beyond simple recovery. The program is small and standalone, it does not require installation and can also run from a Floppy disk. Restoration works with FAT and NTFS as well as digital cameras cards.

I found this information very useful and thought others may also.

Re: How To Recover A Deleted File

There's a new law in effect regarding deleting files and cleaning hard drives and other devices when you get rid of them. See this CNET story:

    1. Security Watch: Data destruction--it's harder than you think

Within Windows, it's notoriously hard to permanently delete files. For
accidental deletions and criminal investigators, this is great. However,
criminals know this as well. New federal rules require data destruction
but provide little guidance regarding electronic data destruction.
