Number formats on Fields (Word XP)

I am having problems trying to format a filed in a Merge Document.

There are 3 fields: C/F; This Month; Now owing, (Which is a calculated Field).
The problem is that I am using an elipse () to indicate a credit balance, (for easier understanding by older recipients). I am trying to use the switch # $,##0.00;($,##0.00). The problem is that if the C/F and/or Now Owing field is in Credit, the right hand elipse lines up vertically with the right hand zero of the 'This Month' amount. ie I can't line up the decimal points, because the right hand elipse justifies to the right. I have tried to insert a space after the .00 in the first formatting argument, but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you use a decimal tab to outline the numbers on the decimal point?

If you click the button on the left hand side of the ruler, it will rotate through the available tab types; the third after the standard left tab is the decimal tab.

It only works if you insert a tab before the merge field (unless the merge fields are in a table)

(Edited by Andrew Lockton on 15-Jun-05 09:30. Hans beat me to the draw - no surprises there!)
Are you using a decimal align tab to do the number alignment? In my version of Word this takes care of the alignment correctly rather than trying to get the same effect from the merge field.

Whoops, got in too late with the reply - perhaps you could post a cut-down sample file so we can see how you are aligning the the text.

... and when the text is in the table, you need to use left-aligned paragraph formatting.

    Hi Devious,

To insert leading/trailing spaces for the +ve values, try formatting the number switch as # $,##0.00 ;($,##0.00). Note the slash & space sets (ie ' ' ) in the switch to force the display of the leading/trailing spaces.

    Cheers
