Control Panel Applet (XP Pro - SP2)

I have a strange applet in my control panel. Don't know exactly when it showed up there... I used Microsoft Power Toys TweakUI to untick all of the Control Panel applets, but some are hard-wired to remain. The ONE that I was trying to get rid of is still there.

Two questions: First of all, does anyone recognize the control panel applet that I've selected in the attached pix. And secondly, any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Might be worth looking at this, to see if it's a valid Microsoft file?

I'm a bit puzzled how that could get to be an icon in your Control Panel, since the functions that appear there should have corresponding "control panel extension" files in C:WINDOWSsystem32 with the .CPL suffix. See Jerry Schulmann's Tip 5012. Have a hunt to see if your audiodev.dll has been given a further .CPL suffix...

Right click on that "applet" and see what it's properties are. I'd be surprised if it's not a shortcut to the .dll file in your System 32 folder. If it's just a shortcut, you can safely delete it. But to be safe, try renaming it. If there are no ill effects after a week or so, delete it. John / Doc -

I did a search of the C drive for *.cpl and rec'd a familiar list, but nothing that resembles audiodev. I went ahead and ticked all the boxes in TweakUI to restore the good control panel items. It looks like a legitimate file but without the CPL extension, I can't see how it shows up in my CP.

I right-cliked the applet and the menu only offered the choices of Open and Create Shortcut. This has the same behavior as the other icons in the list. I changed the CP view over to the Category View and the Audiondev icon showed up in the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices category.

I (left) double-clicked the icon to see if the computer would begin formatting my C drive and it just opened up an explorer window to my internal 3.5" card reader. This is useless so I selected the icon and went for the big red X (delete) and nothing happened. It won't be deleted! There is only one audiodev.dll file in my system32 folder, it is a microsoft file so I'm very hesitant to delete the dll. There must be a decent way to remove it from the CP?

Audiondev icon showed up in the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices category

That would make sense since this is most likely a .dll for some type of audio player. Are all those Removeable Disks really iPods ?? Perhaps the software for one of these has installed itself into your Control Panel or created this link for some reason.

No, I don't do iPods! (I think they're way too expensive for a miniature hard drive) I have a 3.5" media card reader installed in my PC. The media card reader has 4 slots for different types of media. I primarily use the slot made for CompactFlash Cards (the type I use in my digital camera). Each slot is assigned a different drive letter...

Since I can access the drives using Explorer, it seems useless to have this access through CP: I doubt anyone would ever use CP to see the contents of a folder! That pretty much puts me back where I started...any idea how to remove this one item from my CP? There must be a registry entry that's putting it there as this is not a typical .cpl file inside the system32 folder.

Re: Control Panel Applet (XP Pro - SP2)

Have you tried the support page or help department of the card reader for a solution. If their software put the applet there, they should be able to tell you how to remove it.

If you're really intent on removing this from your system, and can't find it in the registry, you might try a utility specifically designed to delete stubborn files. I wouldn't want to speculate on the consequences of forcefully removing this icon/applet, so proceed at your own risk and backup your data first. My choices for this would be Dr. Delete or KillBox.

Re: Control Panel Applet (XP Pro - SP2)

No, it's not listed there... I did a registry search and found more than a dozen instances of C:windowssystem32audiodev.dll . None of them appeared to be the source of the control panel item... I thought I'd better let it be.

Other than an annoyance, I guess it's really not that big a deal. It will probably go away one day as suddenly as it came...

If you want to fool around with it an still maintain a degree of safety, you could try uninstalling the software for the card reader and see if the "applet" goes away. If it does, then you have your answer. If it doesn't, you can reinstall the software and be none the worse for the experience. Just a thought.
