Weird XL startup problem (WinNT4, XL97)

Just today, I started up XL and for some reason it opened a copy of a spreadsheet I was using earlier - completely automatically, no comments about recovering it or anything - and since then I have closed and reopened XL several times and every time it opens this spreadsheet, which it calls [Book2]Sheet1.

It's driving me barmy! How do I get it to stop? I've got a proper copy of it elsewhere so this can be deleted completely if I can find out how to do it, but so far I haven't been able to do so!

Can anyone suggest how I can get rid of this flaming spreadsheet?! Or workbook, to be more accurate.

    Many thanks in advance

Excel has two startup folders. It will (try to) open all files in these folders. One of them is named XLStart, on your system it's probably C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeXLStart. The other one can be set in the General tab of Tools | Options..., in Alternate Startup File Location. See if either of these folders contains anything (apart from your personal macro workbook Personal.xls - that's OK).

Added: Also check whether the Alternate Startup File Location has become set to one of your document folders. If so, either change or clear this option.

Thanks, Hans, that was it - and I should have known, too, I've been using XLStart (and Word's equivalent, Startup) for as long as I can remember!

Sometimes it takes someone else to point out the obvious!
