    Creating a document(book) cover (WinXP SP2)

I am trying to create a cover for a book I have written. Using Word 2000, I open a new document, size it to 8x10 inches. I can type in the title I want in the the font size and type and have it centered. Then I want to put a picture on the cover. I have tried creating a Text Box then going to the picture file and dbl clicking on the picture file name. All I can get in the Word document is a frame outline within the text box. I have also tried the same without creating a Text Box and just going : Insert Picture from file. My picture is a jpg loaded in my PhotoShop CS. Tried the Copy and Paste route and it doesn't work either.
Any ideas as to whatinhell I am doing WRONG or where to go from here??
    Thanx all.

I'm using Word 2003 but 2000 should have a similar option. Tools>Options>View tab and make sure that "Picture Placeholders" is NOT checked.

... and in addition to John's suggestion, make sure you are working in Page Layout view (or it may be called Print Layout view in your version of Word), not Normal view, which you can select from the View menu.

Thanx very much Rebel and Ian. The secret was unchecking Picture Placeholders. As we used to say in the Air Force "PFM"
