    Curious Windowing Behavior (WinXP P2)

Dual monitor, ATI Radeon 7000 series
From time to time my system decides that most, but not all, new applications or instances within applications which require a new window will only open in mimimized fashion in the tray. If I try to open them with a left click they disappear to the upper left corner of monitor 1. If I right click I usually can either select Monitor 1 or, failing that, select MOVE and get them down and to the right and into the viewing area with arrow keys. Sometimes not. The only sometime cure is rebooting several times consecutively. I've just gotten some very good advice on a different subject from this august group and thought I would push my luck.

First, do you have the most current drivers for your video card?

Yes, I think so. I have one of the original RADEON VE cards which is now the 7000 series. Nothing appears to have been posted since 2004, when I last updated..

If you have an OEM PC, you should check the vendor (i.e. Dell, HP, etc.) site for updates. You can also go to ATI - Radeon drivers for links to the most current software.

Re: Curious Windowing Behavior (WinXP P2)

I build them myself and this machine has been very stable for 5 years. I checked ATI. My video card is becoming a legacy card for them. Since it has been stable, setting aside a hardware failure, and assuming that the 2004 driver update, which was good for at least 2-7 months, is still correct (I can download and re-install it), then what might be at play?

Have you updated any software or added any new software or hardware that would coincide with when the problem started? You could try a System Restore.

I am months and many changes past being able to do a restore. Sigh.

I'd try to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
