    Unwanted autonumbering (Word XP SP3)

Like most people who aren't MS Office experts, I sometimes wrestle with formatting issues in Word, especially some that occur automatically.

Here's a new battle. I'm editing a Word doc that contains numbered paragraphs using Word's autonumber feature. I'm in, say, paragraph 3. I add some punctuation to the first line, which pushes characters after the insertion point farther to the right. What it's also doing is adding autonumbers at the start of lines 3,4, and 5. It's not automatically incrementing the numbers, though - the #3 is being repeated at the beginning of line 3 of that paragraph. at the beginning of line 4, and the beginning of lione 5.

It shouldn't be adding ANY autonumbers in the middle of that paragraph, however!

It;s also happening in at least one another paragraph (8), which has an additional "8" about halfway down.

What the heck is going on, and how do I correct it?

    Many TIA

Could there be a mix of autonumbers and SEQ fields or manually typed numbers? Tracked changes? Hidden text? There are some many ways for autonumbers to get out of whack...

    Manually typed numbers? No.

Tracked changes is in fact turned on.

SEQ fields? Don't know what those are.

Thanks for bearing with me, and all further insights

Can you post a short sample to illustrate the problem?

See paragraph now numbered 1 (formerly 3) in the attached.

If you delete the comma in the first line of Para. 1, the extra "1" autonumbers will disappear. Adding the comma is what created them in the first place, and has done so in a number of places in the full document, on an unpredictable basis.

    Thanks!

Your problem appears to be caused by tracked changes. If you accept all changes in the document then it behaves fine.

Re: Unwanted autonumbering (Word XP SP3)

Thanks Stuart. I was trying to figure out why MS Word was doing it in the first place, and I needed to keep a "track changes" version of the document (hopefully without the wacky formatting, and without turning off autonumbering altogether).

But sometimes it just makes sense to use the workaround, "ours is not to wonder why" the wisdom coming out of Redmond.

    Thanks again.

I think it will look fine if you set word to display the final document only, I can't remember how you do this in Word XP.
