    Help (Office XP)

I've been having problems with VBA Help in Word XP. Sometimes it doesn't open at all, other times I can't click in the fields to type the Keyword to search the Index, or to type a question in the Answer Wizard. Instead of the insertion point over these fields, I get the sizing tool symbol (opposite-pointing arrows). I've uninstalled Office XP (and Office 2003), reinstalling both with the related SPs. I've done this in every possible sequence. I feel that a full, "clean", uninstall is the key, but I'm unable to find the required filed to use for this. I have been told there is one for each version of Office, and I know I have seen reference to them myself.

Can anyone point me to these to "full remove" files?

    Thanks,
    Richard Barrett

    Re: Help (Office XP)

Microsoft published tools to completely uninstall Office 97 and Office 2000, but I haven't heard of or seen similar tools for Office XP or Office 2003.

Office versions should always be installed in oldest to newest order, i.e. install Office XP before Office 2003, and each version should be installed in a different folder.

    Re: Help (Office XP)

Thanks. I did install Office XP first, then Office 2003. The thing I experimented with was installing the Service Packs in different order. My first attempt (which didn't work) was also my final attempt (because I thought it was right). This was the order: Office XP; XP Service Packs; Office 2003 with SP1.

Immediately after installing Office XP, I had the problem with the Help file. Originally I thought it was caused by having Office 2003 on the same PC. But I have both versions installed on other PCs without problem. I suppose this means a re-install of Windows itself. I imagine the problem is in the Registry.

    Thanks again,
    Richard

I'm afraid I have no experience with installing multiple versions on one PC, but there are several Loungers who do, perhaps they will have a suggestion.

I'm sure this is a silly question, but did you actually install all the help when you installed Office XP?

    Re: Help (Office XP)

Yes, I did. The most offending part of the problem is the sizing cursor which appears when I try to type in the several fields. F1 works in most cases, but if I did to drill down, I have trouble.

I used to have that problem with the resizing arrow now and then with the HTML help for the VBE, perhaps several times a month. Frankly, I think it only went away after restarting Windows...

I wish my were that fickle! I've re-booted, re-installed... everything I can think of. Of any PC I use in my office, I restart that particul one the most frequently. The problem persists.

    Re: Help (Office XP)

Something you might try: let's assume that using F1 from inside an Office application works as expected with a fully functional Contents/Find/Answer Wizard pane. If you keep that minimized, when you press F1 in the VBE, hopefully the VBE will re-use the existing window without wrecking the left pane. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Re: Help (Office XP)

Thank you! That worked successfully. I never use Help in Word, so I would never have thought of this, and certainly wouldn't have stumbled on it by accident. Once I close HTML Help, however, re-trying in the VBE produces the same old results. No matter... I'm quite happy.

This means I can put the PC back into retirement that I hauled out for the XP VBA project I was working on and wanted access to Help.

    Thanks again.

I used to suffer from this symptom - I have absolutely no idea when or why it went away, I suspect it may have been one of the many Windows Updates over the last year. Are you completely up to date with updates for Windows and Office?

Yes, I'm up to date. I have the same configuration on other PCs... same applications, same level of updates... and I do not have the problem.
